I have been looking for a belt to run a governor on my steam engine . Rather than the spring ones . needs to be about 12 inch long about 1/8 wide . . , I cant find anything in this country , have anyone come across something similar ?

sorry I am in UK , it seems suitable belts are available in USA , I do have a couple of elastic bands from the post man , but not sure when to obtain similar ones , these degrade quite quickly

Spare belts for things like tape recorders work quite well, you may need to split something down the middle as 3mm in that sort of length is hard to find but 5-6mm are about such as this

Have you tried Beltingonline.com I bought a 6mm wide belt for my small lathe from them it cost a few pounds and just tried their web site and it accepted 3mm.

Get the right length and appropriate pitch poly-vee belt and cut it down to the width you need. I've done that to replace a round belt on the narrow pulleys. Works wonderfully well.

You can get O-ring material in continuous lengths, make a loop by joining with superglue in a jig. Or may be able to get a suitable large 1/3 or 3 mm O ring?

What about the PU belt you weld together with heat. I believe you can get that in small sizes.

3D printer timing belt is 6mm wide. Join ends together with Loctite, same as you join O-ring material. Run on the tooth side of the belt or alternatively on the ftat side.

If you cannot find a source of the spring belts used for Meccano, the garter springs from lip seals (oil seals ) are the same. To shorten, you need to cut the spring and then carefully unwind the wire of the cut end, to expose the tapered end. Having arrived at the required length, you then twist to the free end, a few turns, in the opposite direction that is required to "screw" the belt back together, so that when rejoined it is has minimal twist.
