Was working in my shed today and grabbed the John Bull indicator and I noticed the tip must have come lose and fallen out . Been looking on the net to see if I can buy a few ,I can't seem to find any . Would anyone know what size the threads would be . maybe I could source one of a different make .

You only have just the one? I don't know another turner/miller who only has one! They are likely imperial or metric, but nearly all the same within those two groups.

Baty dial gauges have M2.5 threads – only a guess, but these may be industry standard.

I’ll have a look in my shed shortly. I possibly have a few spares too.

Just a quick thought, are you able to measure the minor of the thread in the gauge? Or does the “stop” on the other end unscrew?

I don't have a "John Bull" indicator, so I am not familiar with the instrument. I am assuming the missing pointer has a male thread. If so, try using something like a toothpick and screw it into the female socket. You might just get a thread pitch and an OD from this test. Good luck!

I’ve tried unscrewing the other end but it seems to very tight . I’ll try the toothpick trick cheers .

Yes, sorry if I stated the obvious. I have noted that you don't accept ideas easily when alternatives are suggested. 'Warpage' comes to mine vey recently.

I consider all the alternatives available to me before posting Some don't. Most of my stuff is second hand and I have a large range of odd bolts and screws, but not taps in all sizes. I would be checking my other dial tips (yes, i have several old ones picked up over decades), or other small screws, to determine the thread. There are not that many in that size range. Speedy builder5 likely wrankled as well, but never mind, I will just chuckle next time I read your posts.

I have two John Bull indicators, both acquired recently, and both imperial. One is without its tip. A 6BA screw goes into both perfectly. Hugh.

Well……. Thanks to the generosity of Jimmy b ,I now have a functional dial indicator again . I know some may think ….well it's not that big of a deal ,but to me it is ..

                                    Thanks again Jimmy b
