Wanner oil gun

I bought my Wanner oil gun from Myfords Nottingham just before they closed their doors for the final time. I bought it on the strength of Harry Paviour's comment in his Connoisseur lathe report in MEW 2003. "Trust me, they are the business and they don't leak"

Have I just been unlucky? With SAE 30 oil it leaks badly, with Nuto H 32 it is unusable. What a mess.

Myford had closed, I was stuck with it. Very disappointing. At about £70 a pop I am loath to invest in another. I would be interested to hear others experiences with it, or alternative guns that are reliable.

I used to use a red painted pump oilcan which wasted/spilt more oil than wad actually used.
Got a Reilang to dispense expensive Myford oil – no waste. Expensive oilcan but damn good quality and should soon pay for itself in saved oil.
When Myford oil runs out, will look for cheaper good alternative.

After years of the same problem I converted a £12 grease gun by sealing the main chamber and keeping the main chamber vertical (upside down ) so that the oil feeds into the pressure cylinder by gravity. This arrangement is described in detail on the web (Google converting a grease gun for oil ). This arrangement has worked well for me on my Mill.

Try a warranty claim with 'new' Myford/RDG .

There is nothing magical or special about Myford oil. It is simply 32 grade hydraulic oil which is widely available from many suppliers. My local commercial garden machinery dealer has a bulk tank and will supply small quantities at very reasonable price just bring your own one litre container.

Adrian, snap for your experience, I did the same thing and the Myford oil gun lubricates the operator rather than the machine!

Recently I bought one from Pressparts see the link and it works much better, not perfect but fantastic by comparison and at £15 I am pleased.

Thanks to everyone for your input, very helpful. I am going to play about with the Wanner first, see if I can cheer it up a bit. If not it can go in the bin! John's Pressparts gun sounds pretty good.

Make your own:- any one with a half decent kit should have no trouble in making it

Its based on the American Eagle 66 can of 1900 vintage it uses 2" ally tube for the body, and you can make the nozzle to suit your application. I've had mine in regular use for 6 months now and it works perfectly with no leaks, far better than the Railing can that I bought and ended up bending the lever.

I've dawn it up and submitted an article to Neil that hopefully he will publish.

I, too, bent the lever on my Reilang but mine had a hydraulic connector. So far as I can see the lever is not available as a spare.

My Wanner with plain nozzle for the Myford oil nipples is just about usable.

My Myford oil gun, (expensive I thought) was very good at oiling everything; except the lathe. Bought an even more costly Reilang, which had the advantage of doing what I wanted it to, and has continued to do so for many years, even when used at strange angles. And, no my lever has never bent!
