i have started building a shand mason fire engine westbury plans i have the 6 sheets of drawings and the castings. on sheet 4 there is a syphon box which appears from the photos to fit on the rear of the steam box. i cannot work out what it does and where do the pipes from the bottom of this box go to . some photos on the net show the pipes going to the crank bearing the drawing only show 1/16 oil holes no pipes

where can i buy the suction and discharge (fire hose) or what can i make them from

        regards tom hardy

          Hi Tom.

You are corect the box contains oil and 3 pipes go from the bottom and go to the crank bearings, if I remember correctly I put string in the pipes to act as wicks.

This how I made my suction/discharge hoses:

I length of plastic tube ( car windscreen washer type)

slide a rod of steel/brass down the bore.

mounted on the lathe, one end in chuck other supported by a tailstock centre

then set the lathe to say 8 tpi screw cutting

then as if winding a spring wrap a thin wire along the length of the tube

remove from the lathe cover with white heat shrink sleeving and heat using a hot air gun.

The end result looks really good with the wire looking like the ribs of the hoses.

          Hope that makes sense?

If not I will try again.

Do you have a copy of the build article from Model Engineer mag?

If not I have scans of them & could put them on disc for you.

There are some photos's of mine in my album
