Although small electric motors have made them almost obsolete for anyone contemplating making an overhead drive, perhaps for a treadle lathe, this ebay listing shows a neat idea.

I think most people will be familiar with the company advertising it. Gosh if they hadn't said it wasn't made by Holtzapfel one could easily be fooled

And it just so happens I got some bits of water pipe out of a skip recently. Knew it was too good to pass by though I had been wondering how many years it would take to find a use.

About the best summary I've seen on this subject was by Tubal Cain (has a quick rummage in his back issues!) in an article called "Milling Spindle Drives" ( 5th Dec 1975 ) . It also has a simplified O/H drive set-up that TC recommended for anyone needing such a thing.

PM me if you'd like a scan. Been meaning to build one but other things keep interrupting me…

On the smaller scale, however … it's worth looking at this I.M.E. on ebay, for inspiration.

Yes Michael, I have a copy – assuming you are referring to "Wheel & Pinion Cutting in Horology"

It's a very good reference book, absolutely full of good material & ideas for anyone working on smaller lathes – not just clock/watchmakers, although that is obviously the main focus. I was very lucky to get my copy new at half the list price which made it even better value.

There are a number of overheads shown and Malcolm also developed a fairly sophisticated version (with a small motor mounted at the rear) which I believe was published in ME (not got time to dig it out this morning) and at one time a kit of parts for this device was available from Malcolm (not sure if it is still is though).

Hi all,

I recently converted a large industrial gas storage cupboard into a home for one of my EW lathes. It cost me £50 and provides a lot of storage as well as providing mounting points for an overhead drive.

I can't help thinking that putting 'not holtzapfel etc.' or 'not myfiord etc.' is a neat way to help your listing to the top of the eBay search pile

'neat' maybe … but thoroughly infuriating for those trying to search for something that is [whatever search term].

Does anyone have a good workaround ?

Yes, in principle, it works

… the 'battle of wits' does get tedious though.

Example … supposing that one was looking for a Myford Lathe.

I think this misuse might be why the listing vanished.

The endless use of 'Myford' does annoy me, especially when used by the increasing number of garage traders who clutter searches with bent bits of metal at inflated prices on the off chance they might have something to do with a lathe.

I knew it was done, but didn't realise there's a whole cottage industry in this!

One well-known company seems to be particularly creative "clock vernier calliper suit myford lathe".

Mind you the pair of plummer blocks 'from myford countershaft' was pretty good as well.

Tool cabinets? Liberon beeswax? Lumps of plastic and metal? A book about airguns? All Myford compatible!

What next? "Leather Sofa – ideal for sitting on to read about Myford lathes"
