I bought a collet chuck some time ago that had flats milled on it for a 32mm AF spanner. Except of course it was a little over 32mm so it was difficult to get the spanner on. I eased the spanner a little and it fits fine. I've just received another item with 32mm flats and this time it's quite a bit over 32mm but it makes sense to reduce it a little rather than buy a 33mm spanner. No problem as the item isn't hardened and there's enough material to take off point four of a mm. The flats aren't equal anyway so taking a little off should even them up.

This got me thinking though, which should be bigger or smaller on fasteners? The spanner or the nut? And by how much? Enquiring minds need to know!

The standard sizes for spanners always allow a clearance over the nominal size of the nut or bolt – otherwise you would never get them to fit. So, there is a range of sizes for the nut, and a range of sizes for the spanner, and they should not overlap. The sizes, that is. This is why it is no problem using a 5/16 AF spanner on an 8mm nut, as the sizes are:

5/16 = 0.3125 inches

8mm = 0.3150 inches.

and the clearance is always more than 0.0025"

As mentioned elsewhere : Flank-Drive spanners are the answer.

Are you sure its not 1 1/4" rather than metric?
