hi guys I am building a cracker engine as I wanted to start small as I have always wanted to do a Train I will probably will be handing it to my grandson

The question is can I make a boiler from Brass as the drawings do not specify the material as looking around they are mostly copper or steel

        thanks Kevin

I don't think brass is a good idea as when it de-zincifies ( is that a word?) it becomes weak. Copper and steel are better suited I believe. Others can advise far better than me on this subject.

          Hope it goes well. Ian

Top of the drawing says "boiler copper – all joints silver soldered" Which would be the prefered material

Having said that if its just for use at home then the engine is no larger than a Mamod which have brass boilers you should be OK for occasional use.

I would also strongly suggest you fit a safety valve into the filling bush and not just a plug, again Mamod ones can be bought on e-bay and thread the bush to suit

I think Tubal Cain commented on one of his small (mamod sized) boilers that the brass could become brittle and fail in a century or so's time.

thanks for the info I have been looking at this drawing all afternoon and missed the copper bit at the top it must be the clocks going back or a blond moment

I suppose if it is for show a wall hanger and not run in public this will be ok

                ty Kevin
