Oh dear, if I've got my calculations right this is my 1000th post on the ME forum. That raises a conundrum; here's a partial quote from a previous thread with the names of innocent, and possibly the guilty, removed:

The culprits are clearly the seasoned posters that have a score of plus 1000 posts. with the exception of ***** who is a good guy with over 2000 posts. Now they have turned their attention to ***** with their bullying tactics with racial discrimination thrown in as well!

***** has turned a blind eye on these pests who contaminate the threads with their nonsense.

*****, you remember my tussle with a 1000+ poster on another thread, don`t become one of them.

So it would appear that I'm now irrevocably accursed and can only contribute nonsense. In the words of the Clash:

As you are in a reflective and sentimental mood over past conflicts consider this:-

If you spend just 5 min in reading and responding to posts here that is at least 2 "working" weeks that you have devoted to it so far. Just think of all the metal you could have polished in that time – in calm, reflective comfort unworried by the troubles, slings and arrows of other posters. Think too of all the other useful things you could have accomplished – like clearing up the kitchen for instance ( We've all seen the pictures!)

Arghhhhh………… I see that I too have reached 940 posts – so the magic 1000 fast approaches – so what am I going to do….?

I'm firmly of the opinion that a little nonsense / humour is a useful thing in life – the WD40 that helps it all work.

Thanks for all the comments.

Alan: Interesting link; could have done with some of those when my girlfriend got over-excited and knocked a glass of red wine over the carpet.

Norman: The kitchen is even worse than it was, as I now have all this year's seeds spread out ready for sowing; if the weather ever improves. But, to compensate, the workshop is a lot tidier now with new shelves, new racking system, junk binned and milling cutters all in neat rows.

Neil: I'm afraid that I simply don't understand your post, is it humorous or are you telling me to sling my hook? With regards to vessels, a full kettle whistles when it boils, but an empty one doesn't.

Well Andrew

My 1000th post has now arrived so I thought it suitable that I add it to your thread. A time for reflection and a realisation that I spend far too much time at my computer rather than getting on and doing "stuff".

Inevitably, I suppose, the same questions keep recurring here and I do feel that some of the "Fizz" has gone out of the forum since DC's departure.

Thanks to all for the useful and interesting input over the last 4 years- I hope I may occasionally have added something to the discussions. I'm not leaving but think I will try to visit less often and spend more time progressing some of my many projects – model engineering and otherwise!

Not crossing the Rubicon maybe but surfing on the incoming tide?

Congratulations on reaching the milestone; if nothing else it isn't half a lot of typing! I've certainly valued your posts.

I don't know about 'fizz', but I agree that the forum has changed over time, possibly reflecting a change in the make up of members.

Here we are again, this time at 1500 posts. Of course once the Rubicon has been crossed there is no turning back, but I have reached a crossroads. For a few reasons, some related to this forum, and some not, I have decided to reduce my participation for the time being. That does not mean that I will stop posting in toto, but I will not be boring people with long posts on work in progress, or new projects and ideas.

I have deleted a few pictures from my albums that I do not think appeared in any thread; the remaining pictures will stay. I will be reading, and replying if appropriate, to PMs.

For those interested in larger scale traction engines I will still be running my build diary on the TractionTalk forum, under the sobriquet 'oly2brf5'. Once I have got to grips with the physics and mathematics I also intend to start a thread on TT regarding the theory of compounding, steam flows and valve gear design.

It`s good to see my very relevant (at the time) comments quoted in your post and to know that you have a conscience even though you`ve carried on to the next rubicon or limit in the English language.

Seriously, in the past I`ve been hounded by certain 1000+ posters when trying to put forward a sensible thread, you know who you are!

You`ve quoted me out of context but my honest opinion is that it`s not the amount of posts that` people make but the content contained within those postings that count.

These heckling posts on the Forum seem to have diminished in the last two years and I know why, It`s a pity as I miss the drama.

This thread started with reference to some criticism from various quarters. I think it is quite noticeable that this forum has become a very pleasant place to be of late (with one notable recent exception! ) so hats off to the contributors and moderators.

I often wonder what motivates the 1000+ers? I think that you`ve underestimated the amount of time necessary to do a 1000 posts, you have to include the thinking time as well as the writing and sending time. Perhaps the thinking time is lacking in some of the posts but on average there are much appreciated contributions as well!

If the 1000+ poster is an invalid and can only write a post via some kind of transducer, then this is understandable but if the poster is a normal healthy person then we can only question why this person chooses to immerse themselves for years in the comforting world of Forums talking to unseen friends when the allure of the workshop is available or the pub or even the box.with 500 channels. The wife or girlfriend would probably like to speak to you occasionally as well. Food for thought!
