Well I'm heading there in the morning. Is there anything in that area worth a visit from this model engineering wannabee? Any interesting shops i i should visit?

          Mark,

          Museum Boerhaave is absolutely wonderful.

[Leiden is only a short train ride from Amsterdam]

Sadly it is only open on Tuesday's, but it looks nice

Or if you have a little more time this is also worth a visit.

Sadly the last time I was there (IBC show) the most interesting thing I noticed was how different their bicycles were.

Be aware that the little guy on the tram who looks like he sells tickets – doesn't. You have to get them at the kiosk or machine before hand.

**LINK** is a nice collection, about an hour north of Amsterdam.

You can also visit the oldest museum in the Netherlands, open since 1784 the Teylers Museum is in the fine city of Haarlem a short trip by train. **LINK**

It has a fine collection of instruments from the 18th and 19th century **LINK**

Probably on your way on your trip already, but when living in The Hague I used to like going to Herman Buitelaar's shop in Gouda.

http://buitelaar.nl His english is great. I did walk to his new store from the Gouda train station last time I was there. (I love walking)

SSN in Rotterdam – again, moved since I lived there, but easily walkable from a Rotterdam station (http://stoomstichting.nl)

Railway museum in Utrecht. Army museum in Leiden. There's like 400 museums in The Netherlands, IIRC.

                    (googled the army museum – it's closing Jan 2013 – http://www.armymuseum.nl/get?site=legermuseum.en)

Enjoy your trip; when living there, I found the Dutch to be an incredibly nice bunch of people.

When I was last there I thought how poor the Dutch people looked. There were loads of young ladies sitting in windows…and they had hardly any clothes to wear wink

Ho John guess that you have been down the left hand side of Dam square naughty boy, Yes I have many dear friends in Holland but did not realise there was so much left after the war. I am very much a strange mixture of Hebridean, Scandinavian and Dutch, But that is another story for another time. will be going over there next year so would be interested in what you find ME wise.

Luckily the Netherlands is more than certain areas in Amsterdam, for those with a wider view and more time this is also worth a visit. **LINK**

Not model engineering but the Pancake Bakery on Prinsengracht is a great place to eat. Usually very busy though.

Probably too late as you have already gone, I was about to recommend a canal cruise, I found it most informative & relaxing
