      Hi
Has anyone availed themselves of this installation service.
I am wanting to fit a DRO to a lathe and am a little nervous about doing it on my own.

          Hi Chris,

Not used their services but I have fitted a DRO system to my Warco GH1330, used the glass scale for the Z0 and magnetic scales for Z1 and X axes.

All were purchased from Allendale (machine-dro.co.uk) and were supplied with comprehensive installation instructions.

What make of lathe are you installing on? I am sure there are many here that can give advice etc as to the best way to install

It is not a difficult job, just one that needs a little patience and care

            Proaby a 1322 or a 1330.

Why did you go for glass & magnetic I wonder ?

            Also what is Z0 , Z1 & X ?

            Thanks Chris

X is left to right motion, Y is back and forth.

Z1 and Z2 refer to vertical motion (presumably the knee or head and the quill in machine with two vertical motions.

Other axes would be likely to be rotation around one of the three (X,Y,Z) primary axes.

That is what I understood on a Mill but this applies to a Lathe so I'm lost a bit ( as usual )

I have decided to fit a DRO myself.
Does anyone have one fitted to their Warco lathe.
A photo or two would be appreciated

I got mine from Allendale. He does have some photos of various installs, so wing him an email maybe.

                              Hi Chris,

I will try and get some photos sorted but if you need advice, PM me and we can talk about the install. I am In East Hampshire so If I am close, I would be happy to assist smiley

I went for the Glass scale on the Saddle essentially because it was cheaper at the time. I also considered it would be more robust over the travel distance on a GH1330.

The magnetic scales on the cross and compound slides were chosen because they are more compact than the equivalent glass scales. I used the 2 part scale mounts as that was all that was available at the time. I have since changed to their 'One Part' mounting kit and have to say, that is what I would use on future installs, reduces the install profile by around 5mm.

I used the budget readout head from Machine-DRO and this has proved more than adequate for the lathe. It has a Z0+Z1 combine facility which has proved very useful at times.

My primary reason for installing a DRO was that I have difficulty in reading small scale divisions caused by a visionary defect, ( I have Kerotaconus). Having a DRO on the lathe has transformed my machining ability. (Had one on the mill for ages!)

                              Regards

                              Graeme
