Who does the best catalogue???

As a newbie I'm wondering who produces the 'go-to' catalogue. I do quite a lot of woodworking and Axminster is has really got the hobby / small business market sewn up. Who is the equvalent in model engineering space.

Two answers ok – is there an on-line only king? I really want a paper catalogue as imo, on-line only is fine if you know exactly what you need but sometimes I quite like to browse (sad I know).

Hi Simon, IMO it's choices really, I don't really think there is a king at all. I think it's like anything else, that is it's best to shop around. However, you can get a free catalogue from Arc Euro Trade and then shop online with them, click on their ad at the top R/H column.

Depends what you want; tools, materials, castings, kits? For a start have a look at the adverts in the digital editions of M.E.

Hi,

there are several major suppliers for machinery and tools etc. All have an online presence and produce print catalogues, as a starter there are: Arc Eurotrade; Warco; (these two advertise on this page – see ribbon to right of here), and Chester; and of course Axminster themselves sell a lot of metalworking equipment. There are other smaller suppliers who offer similar products as most are made in China.

For materials etc there are many smaller suppliers on line such as Blackgates, Reeves 2000, Macc models, Model Fixings etc etc there are too many to mention in a short message.

Also (via Google) try Chronos and RDG Tools (the latter now own the remains of Myford).

Not particularly hobby orientated, but Gloster Tooling (also on line) carry a huge variety of stuff, and don't mind small orders.

Inevitably now it is an online world.

Funnily enough I recently came across an old Arc catalogue anongst some magazines etc from about 10 years ago. Just a couple of pages so it's great to see how they have come on over the years. At Bristol I came across Amadeal who might be the start of the same process of building up.

The real problem with online is the enormous postage costs which is why I like to go to shows. MEX was a disaster from that point. Luckily on Wednesday I was able to divert off a business trip in London to visit a trader's 'shop' or lockup actually. By also getting an item for a friend spent £130 while saving us £25 shipping. ( and I even get to expense some of the petrol cost)

Memory lane: remember Graham Engineering at the old shows. I still have their 2000 catalogue.

On the question of enormous postage costs. What I object is being charged the "standard" delivery cost which could well be a £9.90 next day courier (they send out everything that way) when a jiffy bag and £0.90 large 1st Class stamp would be quite adequate for a small item costing say a fiver.
