Being a recycler the plastic light switch broke on my old Renault 5 and I have repaired it by welding.

These switches are very prone to failure I have 3 faulty ones.

The part welded was about 1mm x 3mm and only took a few seconds to weld and reinforce.

It had a look of Nylon but on fusing the parts together the fumes were very toxic my eyes were watering and stinging.

Does any one know the type of plastic it could be made from.

Windy, the part was probably made from acetal resin. On heating this decomposes to formaldehyde which is very pungent causing the symptoms you describe.

If ABS it can be successfully 'glued' with MEK (Methyl ethyl ketone), shavings dissolved in it can be used to build up areas, but it does dissolve ABS.

Windy, if the break is across the tiny bit near the point of your arrow I think you are snookered.

If you are a recycler than surely its acceptable to get a switch from a car breaker? (Or adapt something from your junkbox, to keep your car on the road)
