Anyone seen the new offering from Aldi today. Available on line only is a portable bandsaw which looks interesting. Only two reviews on the web page but it is capable of cutting through 2" steel bar. Could be a useful tool to have in the shop

I bought one last year and I have found it very good. I had to do some minor tweeks and now can cut very thin slices of steel. There are a few comments about the vice not holding tightly enough, I have found my one to be fine and it will cut through 127mm which is about 5 inches. Regards Pat

Thanks for pointing this out Ray. With the positive experience of Pat I have ordered one of these. I recently borrowed some large pruning loppers from my elderly mother bought from Aldi for a very good price and they were excellent, so am well aware their things can be better than the price suggests.

            Thanks Graham

              "Saw blade 114cm" – interesting!

Does anyone know how much a replacement blade would be?

It would need to be 114cm if you want it to fit.

Thanks. That's good to know. I rashly assumed they'd be non-standard in some way.

I'd be tempted by one of these, as long as it can cut cleanly, squarely and reasonably quickly, and keep on doing so for longer than its guarantee.

                      Hi Bill,

you had me worried for awhile!

seems to be a fairly standard size for portable bandsaws, I think the ones I found were for the similar Milwaukee machine. I think the guarantee is 3 years. Apparently you can set this up vertically with abit of modifying, which is mainly what I want it for – hopefully roughing out parts from 10mm aluminium tooling plate to go on the mill.

Well, it has arrived a day early! I have to say I'm impressed with the Yodel delivery side of things, being able to track the driver to my location is a real bonus.

I've just built it, which was easy enough, and it all seems to work as it should, it looks well made for the money. It is branded Ferrex, similar versions seem to start at £210 on the internet so it would seem to be good value. The proof of the pudding will be in the cutting I guess, I'll probably find something to cut up in the next few days just to try it out.

Will do Graham. I ordered it on Tuesday pm this week, Yodel received it yesterday, so pretty good as they weren't supposed to be released by Aldi until the 26th!

Found, with my 4.5 inch generic Chinese bandsaw that getting the blade tension right made a world of difference to accuracy and blade life.

Made up a tension meter from an article in another UK M E magazine, some time ago. Time well spent.

Tension is set by measuring the blade extension, only a few microns.

I was very tempted to buy one of these Aldi machines and if it had been iavailable in store the grocery bill this week would have been much more but I have two saws, the old favourite, a 6×4 horisontal bandsaw and a Kennedy. These take care of all my cutting now. I think that the Aldi saw would be a good addition to any model workshop since it appears to hace a small footprint and covers most of our needs.

On the subject of blades, I make my own for the bandsaw, silver soldering the lapped joint as described in the magazines on a number of occasions. I also have an Aldi wood cutting bandsaw. This is the small cheap machine. It only cost about £70. At first, I could not get it to cut straight, the blade just wandered all over the place at will. Reset the thing several times and was almost at the point of taking it to the tip when I found a Silverline blade of the right size. It turned out that these blades are thicker than those supplied with the saw and once set up, cut perfect, added to which, they have a lifetime warrantee.

I also decided to buy one of the Aldi portable bandsaws and must say it seems very well made. I wasn't expecting too much at the price but I have been pleasantly surprised. In particular I expected the base to be pretty flimsy but it is a decent steel pressing and the vice, while rather basic, does seem to work ok.

The blade supplied also seems to be a quality one and at first I thought there was no joint in the blade as none was visible, but on closer inspection an almost invisible join can be detected. Overall it does seem a good buy, I just hope my initial impression is justified after I have used it for a while.

Was wandering obediently around Lidl's yesterday (following the wife as she inspected their food products) – when I noticed that they had metal cut-off saws half price (£19.99). Note – it uses cutting disks not blades…

Might have been tempted but I'd already succumbed to the Aldi bandsaw a few months back…

                                          That’s good to know Mick,

mine arrived a couple of days ago, but I’ve been so busy finishing the workshop I haven’t even had a chance to open the box yet!

Was that 1.25” rod using it in horizontal mode, or 1.25” bms plate in vertical mode? (I like the adaptation you have done to use it vertically).

Should say it is a Milwauke saw not an Aldi. It was 1.25" square bar went through nice and steady, tried to keep the base simple, yours should cope just as good I just like the Milwauke equipment, saw cost £230 battery and charger was extra, total cost around £300 its dearer than the Aldi version I suspect but wanted the back up of a big player in the portable equipment scene.

                                            Good luck with yours Graham

Before people have used ones of other saws, or used inner tube. Either a slice of a big one stretched round or a strip of a small one glued in place.
