Could anyone on the forum help with this enquiry please? I have bought a new fine grit Alox wheel for my grinder to go on the opposite end to the CBN wheel, to be used with my Acute tool sharpener. The wheel is a "Faithfull" brand bought from a reputable tool supplier. It came with plastic bushes to mount on the grinder shaft, but none of them fitted mine (15mm, ELU). So I turned up an aluminium bush which is a close sliding fit in the wheel (a shade under 32 mm), bored out to fit the spigots on the cheeks which are a feature of this grinder – the cheeks themselves are a close fit on the shaft. When I assemble the whole caboodle and fit to the grinder, the wheel has a slight (0.5mm?) "wobble", though it is not unbalanced. None of my other wheels have this. (By a "wobble" I mean that the plane of the wheel looks like it's not quite perpendicular to the axis of rotation – sort of a swash plate motion.)

Would such a wobble be within expected range, or should I take the wheel back?

      Thanks, John.

Ive got 3 bench grinders and the wheels vary from 0.1 to 0.3 mm runout on the side of the wheels so 0.5 mm doesn't sound too bad , perhaps trying different positions on the spindle and moving the card wheel grips to a different position on the sides of the wheel might improve things, if the side of the wheel really needs to run true I would lightly dress it to run true if not I,d leave it be.

I would do as Kettrinboy suggests… but first, before you use it, I would give it the 'ring test' ( unless you've already done it ) to ensure that it is not damaged in any way… support the wheel on a spindle of some sort, screwdriver blade / dowel, lightly tap the wheel with a wooden implement… screwdriver handle / small hammer shaft etc. if it 'rings nice & clear' it's ok to use, if it gives a dull sound … it's damaged …bin it, or break it up & use it for honing tool tips, also ensure that the 'spindle speed never exceeds the wheel speed'.

            George.

I recently bought a cheap bench grinder from Screw Fix. The pressed steel discs for holding the wheel true left a little to be desired no matter how many positions tried. Turning some aluminium discs got the wheels running very close to true.

OK, thanks for the advice. It sounds like I need not worry, may be a good idea to try different positions for the flange plates. I did try the ring test, as advised in the wheel instructions, will check again before re-fitting.

                Thanks again, John.

Your wheel does have paper washers doesn't it? A retail out fit in NZ sells DIY wheels that have NO PAPER washers, just a bare wheel. You could try a wooden bush instead of the aluminium.
