dsc07046.jpgdsc07045.jpgdsc07044.jpgI bought this awhile ago, partly because the dial gauge is more accurarate than my other, but mainly because I liked the look of it.

Looks like it has a specific use, and wondered if anyone knows what that is?

I wonder if it is for adjusting a "Microbore" tip in a boring bar ?

It could be used to check for roundness / lobing or concentric it's of one diameter to another ?

Sorry that should have been concentricity of one dia. to another.

                .

Agreed … I have something similar, but fitted with a micrometer thimble.

I made something similar to centre the worm gear on a hub in an Alter D6 mount.

Another use could be to measure the height of a keyway fitted key above the OD of a shaft.

Used on a surface plate in an inspection department for checking a dimension on a number of identical parts, note the small lever on the top for raising the plunger making it easy to place the component for checking.

There is a stop in the V block formed by the base so it could be used to check a dimension off a round or square bar with some shape on the end.

It will also sit flat on a surface plate so could be used for checking thickness and it just happens to have the V block type facility. I'd guess that is most likely.

From the marks on the faces of the 'V' it has been used on round items. From this I would think it is used to measure depth of keyways/steps on a round body.

Comparator from an inspection department to check batch samples, lift plunger with lever, place sample under plunger & check dimension ?

This is a comparator set up. Usually set up with slip gauges to compare the job being measured against the slips. Where possible It should be adjusted so that the plunger does not need to be lifted each time but the job slid under and through to give a wiping action to ensure no dust build-up on the plunger. The measuring anvil would have a spherical end to facilitate this Colin

The "stop" in the V could match the keyway width so that is probably the best answer yet.
