p1020445.jpgp1020440.jpgI am about to cut my first thread on my newly acquired L5. To cut 1.75metric thread I need 70 top shaft, 60 intermediate shaft, 127 bottom shaft. Can someone tell me which shaft is which I iknow this is a beginners question but I cant work it out. If the top shaft is logically the one with the small cog in pic (below) the 70 cog wont fit because it fouls the tail end sleeve.

The 127 will go on the bottom , 60 idler on the middle and 70 on the top stud , the tail end sleeve should unscrew so you that you can then fit a bigger gearwheel on the top stud , well at least mine does , ive only needed to do it once to get an 85t wheel on.

          regards Geoff

Many thanks Geoff, this is a new lathe for me so didnt realize the end sleeve was removeable, when I offered up the 70t cog it was obvious it wouldnt fit. Took off the end sleeve now the 70t cog fits as do the other 2 cogs. So all ready tomorrow to try my first screwcutting. As an aside what is the point of the tail end sleeve, I know another beginners question. Rgds DW

It will direct any swarf, which goes through the spindle, away from the gearing.

that makes sense so need to put it back as soon as screwcutting is finished. Or work out another arrangement of cogs!
