It's traditional fine handwork. The only odd thing about it was the material source – there's no reason why that couldn't have been made from roundstock.

It was interesting to see how the stone was set, something I wish I'd asked an old friend(who was a goldsmith) before he died.

Yes, the fabrication method shown is rapidly being replaced by castings. The disabled jeweller is certainly very accomplished.

I've done quite a bit of claw setting, and hand fabricated quite a few collets in my time.

Can highly recommend other videos by him . He does the lost wax investment casting bit..
One of his things is to laser engrave finger prints of the customer into the inside of the ring.

I am surprised that a jeweller like that would contaminate his workshop with brass. In Birmingham's jewellery quarter, you can see jewellers working with gold, saving every scrap of filed or scraped gold, even recovering gold from hand washing.

I too was surprised .

He works in gold and platinum but seems to show none of the "hygiene" over swarf seen in the gold trade.

Just watch his investment casting station.. foundry is too small a word.

This guy might find the fiddling about with swarf Vs time not worth it….lucky guy

The little old lady who taught me how to use a piercing saw would have had an apron fastened under the bench to catch filings, swarf and any waste. The raw materials would have been weighed on being issued to her at the start, and everything, filings swarf etc together with the finished product weighed again at the end. Any discrepancy over a certain limit was subject to a deduction in wages. As regards cross contamination, I think even the different carats in gold where kept separate certainly Silver would have been kept away from Gold. Her tools were spotlessly clean, particularly her files. She also made clock and watch hands. Her tools for steel were kept separate from those for precious metals She was a very interesting lady to talk to. She worked as a young girl in Birmingham

He made it from two nuts, because that was what he was asked to do, per the messaging in the 'WHY' bit at the end of the video.

Beautiful workmanship, particularly considering the humble source materials, which I expect was the whole raison d'etre.

Another one to Goggle is "most useless machine" responds in many forms of much the same device, mostly wood or plastic construction but I'm sure a design could be replicated in metal.

Silly thing is that the electronic hour counter in the video above probably won't even last ten years, the motor maybe 15 if the bearings are oiled.

More seriously after talking to the Ornamental Turners at the Ally Pally show I found this series about engine turning the pattern on a watch dial.
In case you don't know the George Daniels mentioned wrote a fantastic book "Watchmaking" that details how to make a watch. It is worth getting your local library to reserve it for you. It is a couple of inches thick and full of inspiring photos. Probably does for machinists what 'Riddle of the Sands' is said to do for sailing (book not film).
