      Afternoon all.

Has anyone any experience of the latest Win 10 update released in October?

My machine is telling me to download it.

      Nathan.

I think I read in the last week that they were having the usual problems, this time with writing to some SSD's. Samsung I think. May be a search will bring the problems to light,

My desktop updated to 20H2 about a week ago. Surprised how quickly it installed. No problems so far.

Perhaps should say that It has a Samsung SSD.

              A bit off topic but……….

I have three mates on windoze 10 all pulling out what remaining hair they have, this computer stuff is a nightmare.

I thought I had solved it by going for a Chromebook, despite 15 happy years on linux. Well this has not turned out to be a success, had Linux enabled, worked for a couple of months and after an update all my Linux stuff has disappeared, a few days after Librecad had a dicky fit.

I have updated my old desktop with Linux Mint 19 and am back to normal, happy days. I am back in charge again and not being led around by an operating system.

Chromebook is fine for a quick boot up, to browse and read emails, started installing apps then went back to the proper versions with all the detail. When it did work, drive would not allow viewing of dxf files, apps would not view very well and not print them.

Sorry ……….needed to get that off my chest. lol

              Pete

                Hi Nathan,

I have just updated my laptops to Windows 10 ver. 20H2. Took some time and on one I experienced problems so I had to do a manual update. So far Windows 10 has not caused me any problems.

My main desktop upgraded a few days ago. I reckon it took over an hour with several reboots. SSD hard drive. Has a decent processor Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s) and lots of RAM. I was a bit worried to till it completed. At least two more laptops if not 3 to upgrade.

I forgot to add that I'm running 64bit pro. Will it make any diff to user ease of use ? Nathan.

No, won't make a difference – all mine as updated ( 2 desktops, 3 laptops and 3 tablets, see above) are Win10Pro

Hi guys, still running windows 7 on my PC as i didn't want the hassle of upgrading to 10 but now my missus is getting twitchy as our bank's website says we aren't secure with 7, I'm running Norton & Malwarebytes so not sure if that is true. Anyway I'm going to bite the bullet & go to 10 so what route do you IT gurus recommend for a painless upgrade?laugh

a new machine ! – if your banking is web based and done from a desktop then assuming you have a tv look at a Pi400 for about 70pounds + 6 for PSU – has a keyboard, mice are about 1pound from Poundworld + you might well have a spare HDMI cable – neat simple + will run firefox + chromium if desired.

My 3D printer stopped working causing me to download new software.

Eventually, a new window popped up asking me if I wanted to give permission for the software to access the printer.

I cursed my impetuous mistake and started rewinding back to where I was.

If you pin a large Post It note above the computer to remind yourself that the cause of all future woes is probably the update that might be a good idea.

why I suggested a new machine is that Win7 machines are now several years old and many would be at (even below) the minimum requirements for Win10 – A more common problem is that some peripherals may not work under win10 but that said many have installed win10 ok but make sure you have a mechanism to restore a working win7 system.

I bought a Pi400 on the day they were announced and am very pleased with it – but not primarily because of what it does.

I have a number of Raspberry Pis about the place, right from the first and they are all well designed and useful kit. They run a version of Linux so they are not Windows 10 or 7 and while there is lots of excellent, usually free, software available to do anything you wish, it is not the windows software you are used to using – but then you will see changes going from Win7 to Win10 anyway.

I used to use a Raspberry Pi 4 connected to my TV for internet access and streaming video from a server upstairs. The Pi400 is a little faster but apart from that the only real advantage is that it is an integrated unit with a keyboard built in so it is a neater device to have about the living room. But if I wanted to add a hard disk (at present it runs with a 128Gb SD card) I will again have wires and things all over the place and the mouse is separate so if you are used to a laptop with a trackpad that is another bit of kit.

I suppose what I am saying is a great bit of kit, but only a marginal improvement in performance over exiting Pis and a bit neater – but on the minus side it is an excellent alternative to Windows, with associated learning curve, but it is not a Windows computer.

many Win7 machines only had 150GB hard drives so maxing out the SD card will give you similar storage.
But it is considerably neater with its small but very usable keyboard – it will drive the latest in hi definition displays and plugging in a USB memory stick or even an external 2.5″ drive is easy – the power supply seems to cope ok – it’s not intended for the avid experimenter who adds additional boards – probably the only inconvenience for domestic use is lack of a camera or microphone tho USB versions can be added

Just a word of warning to anyone thinking of buying one of the cheap mini-laptops available for around £150. Some of these have only a 32Gb SSD as the primary drive and 4Gb of RAM. Many people, including my partner, have found that Windows cannot install the mandatory updates due to insufficient space on these machines, even though I moved all the installed apps/programs to the secondary SD card drive so that the primary drive only holds the operating system. The only way to update these would seem to be to download the latest ISO file and do a clean install.

                                                Mike.

I went and had a look at the Raspberry Pi 400 and it's certainly interesting. If there was a cheap plug in screen it would do most things. The main snag is wires trailing around. It's a real computer anyway with plenty of connections. Does anyone know if you can hook a printer up to it?

since it is basically a Debian linux system it should support most if not all USB based printers – there should be a list of supported devices if you search for CUPS + linux (in past all Epsom + HP printers were well supported) – you can often get monitors quite cheaply (I seldom spent more than 20pounds at the local auction + often just a pound or so) – but this was precovid since when it seems prices of 2nd hand machines has shot up. Maybe a second hand tv ? as many have hdmi interfaces

Note that unlike previous versions the new Pi 400 only has an HDMI output not the composite sommector of the early eversions. You can get a converter but that is extra dosh.
