What is this tool?

I bought this as I had assumed it was a vertcial mill facing tool, it's just arrived and takes inserts up the sides as well? So I'm not really sure what it's for.

Also, I think it'll still be ok to use as a facing tool, so where is the best place to search for an insert to fit it?

Is it a Helical mill for contouring and slotting, tips could be a special type.

Chris,

It,s a Helical shell mill. It would be a small fortune to load it up with inserts and would take a lot of rigidity and horse power to use it effectively, not exactly a model engineering type tool.

Forgot to say look for the makers name and you should also find the model number

if you can see them, then you only need to either contact the maker with the info or, get it from their catalogue [usually able to download]

Cutwel list this holder and supply inserts. It is a Korloy Alpha mill and takes APMT11T3 inserts looks like they are around £5 each so about £135 to fully populate it.

I'd use it with 3 cutters on the end, you could use 6 if you want to, and ignor the ones up the sides.

This looks like a cutter that is used at some high speed for maximum metal removing on tough steels, you would need a rigid machine with some large hp motor to drive it.

I really don,t think it's a Korloy Alpha mill as Korloy shell mills are a silver grey colour, this one looks the more normal black . I have quite a few Korloy ones and none are this colour I also have a few Sandvik and Walter ones and they are black. It would be best to look for the makers name or a series of numbers and google it. Could you put up a photo of the insert seat ,as that would also help .

The referance wisible in the top photo is AMCM2100M which googles to a Korloy part referance.

I stand corrected, after blowing up the photo I saw the Korloy logo. It's the first time I have seen black bodies on Korloy mills, well spotted.
