Haven't used the Arc one but I used to have an American style toolpost on my lathe. OK it's easy to adjust the tool height but doing so changes the rake angle so you may well still need shims.

I replaced mine with a homemade quick change tool holder to JohnS' design and find that much better.

When I was at school, in the early 1960s we had those tool posts on the old Harison lathes, I can remember not being over fussed with them, and some of the other kids just could not set the tool hight. Ian S C

If you are going to be changing tools frequently you will spend a lot of time setting each tool to ctr height, at least with a basic toolpost you can keep the same packing with each tool so they at least go back in on height.

                Thanks guys

you're confirming my thoughts, I have a quick change tool holder but not keen on the amount of overhang. It sometime tries to dip, so was wondering if this tool holder would be better.

                regards

                  Dave,

Something doesn't sound right if it's wanting to dip.

                  What lathe & QC?

Sounds as if it isn't too well bolted down.

My first QC was on a 'small' Emco V10P with latest on a Warco BH600G and on no occasion had I/have I been in the least unhappy with them, quite the reverse.

I recommend a QC without reservation!

Geoff – Still haven't fixed the lathe
