Paint and painting specialists question

I have an umpteen tin of Fosroc Galvafroid paint that's in good condition so Im using it on some castings in the unseen areas. All is fine except for cleaning the brush afterwards. The tin says 'use Fosroc thinners'. Ive tried white sprit, turps and modern Hammerite thinners. The latter has no effect. The turps and white sprit don't really dissolve the paint, instead they turn it into rubbery lumps which have to be brushed out of the brush.

Does any one know what might be a proper solvent for this paint or an equivalent to the Fosroc thinner ?

My castings have been bead-blasted so all the old surface filler has been removed. I now have to refill and smoothen them. What would be a good filler for this job please ?

Hi, use what is called Standard Thinners which you can ge tin a 5 litre for less than £20 usually from motor factors or even on Amazon. It is good for cleaning out spray guns or brushes that have been used for any kind of paint that is not oil or water based.

Quick Google shows the official thinners to be available at around £40 for 500 ml. Yikes!

The safety data sheet gives the active ingredient as Solvent Naphtha. **LINK**

Allegedly Lighter Fluid is pure naphtha. Still around for Zippo enthusiasts I see. Naphtha seems to be around at around £5 a litre but no indications as to how pure it is

Not sure that ordinary gun cleaner will do it properly.

Hi, probably cheaper to just buy new brushes or put the handle through a hole in the lid and seal it and store the brush in the paint.

If standard cellulose thinners does not work try some Acetone, (nail varnish remover),

. I use it a lot when doing glass fibre work.

For completeness does standard thinners also work as a thinners when applying the Galvafroid or is it only suitable as an equipment cleaner.

Years ago I got into terrible trouble when I used standard thinners with one of the more exotic paints thinking that if it would wash the brushes out it would do fine to thin it down for spraying. Took weeks to dry enough t get the mess off any sense. I doubt if it would every have dried properly.

Thanks for all your efforts and advice chaps. I have some acetone on order for other things so will try that. If not I'll probably use new brushes as I appear to have accumulated quite a few in my brush box.

No one commented on the filler for the casting surface. I'll try something from Halfrauds if the popular products are ok to use directly on bead-blasted iron surfaces.

I would have thought that car body filler would be ok. Or hi build primer.
