Myford super 7B oiling

Wonder if anyone can help. I read somewhere that the lubrication points on my lathe can be done with Auto transmission fluid of which I have lots. Or is there a specific oil to use. Thanks in advance.

I believe any ISO 32 hydraulic oil can be used as a lube oil on the ML7/S7. If your ATF meets this standard it will be ok. Also if you google David Haythornthwaite you will find a PDF which gives chapter and verse on Myford lubrication.

There are many different grdes of ATF. All have lots of additives. Personally I would not recommend them on a lathe with bronze bearings. The additives in many transmission oils can degrade yellow and white metal bearings.
SAE 32 oil is cheap ad readily available in small quantities as jack oil, e.g.

but a branded hydraulic oil like Nuto 32 would be preferable.

My use of ISO 32 above is incomplete, this defines the viscosity. The standard for the oil is ISO 11158. Also note that ISO 32 viscosity is equivalent to SAE 10W, SAE 30 is similar in viscosity to ISO 100 (100 centistokes).

Finally as Robert says some grades of ATF containing anti wear additives (Zinc dialkil dithiophosphate) can react with yellow and white metals.
