Myford ML10 thread size

Hi All,

Does anybody knows what thread size the bold in the photo is? (see red circle).

I know what it is not because I purchased these taps and thought it was the right size.. It's not M8, not 5/16 UNC, not 5/16 UNF. (I want to add a handwheel)

Possibly 5/16th BSF (22 tpi). Have you got thread gauges to check the tpi. If not offer up what taps or threads that you have got to see if they'll mesh with the threads on the shaft stub, that way you'll get a feel for the thread pitch. Diameter just check with a mic. or caliper. Always just possible it's a special but no reason in that application for it to be, so pretty much certain to be a standard thread of some sort. If it was Whitworth or UNC they are both 18tpi so the nuts for either would go on t'other standard, just not be the right fit. UNF is 24 tpi so should be noticably different.

No I do not have a thread gauge… M8 is going maybe 1 turn, unc is going two turns and unf stops after 3 turns. So I am coming close. Why do you got so many thread sizes😃?

Diameter is 0.310 inch.

If something is British made and not metric then it is unlikely to be UNC/UNF which are American threads and more likely to be BSW/BSF. 0.31 is 5/16 so if BSF it is 22 tpi while 5/16 UNF is 24 tpi so nearly fitted but not close enough.

Ok I will try a BSF tap then with 22 threads per inch.

I do not know about ML10 machines, but my (1972) ML7 seems to use BSF and BA thread size fittings.

I can't believe this, I had exactly the same query about a month ago. Exactly the same thread on what is effectively exactly the same machine . Why, because like you I want to change the existing lever for a handwheel , just like yourself. Happily I can confirm that the thread is indeed 5/16" BSF. Tracy tools will sort you out a tap for not too much money. I paid a fiver (GBP) for a hand wheel with a keyway at a classic bike show. My machine is actually a late Speed Ten and still uses BSF threads, ( which were superceded in the war) so I imagine that anything older will undoubtedly be BSF.

Indeed a coincedence, but I used the search function, but could not find anything about this topic so i started my own. Ok good that you van confirm it is 5/16 BSF. I order the right tap nou hopefully
