Ha! We had this discussion elsewhere recently and yes you’re right its relative and it seems to depend on whether you see the country (that is England, not England and Scotland) as two parts, north and south, or three parts, north, south and Midlands.
I am in the three part camp which in my view puts Manchester and yes also Doncaster and Sheffield into the Midlands. However all three would be up north to a 2 part viewer. Durham and York aren’t that far apart, I use a motorcycle shop in Durham quite regularly.
HI Wolfie,
It’s about 80 miles from York to Durham (I used to meet my girlfriend from the South there for romantic weekends –

). Manchester is about 35 miles south of York (by Latitude). I still think of Scotland as part of the UK though.
It’s all relative! I live in S. Leicestershire quite near the M1 in a village with a couple of good pubs, and it’s often a stopping off point for ‘refreshments’ for folks from Yorkshire travelling down for footie or Rugby league matches. On one occasion one of our locals was deriding ‘Southern Jessies’ when a bunch of burly Rugby followers pointed out that he was one. He was most peeved.
However on another occasion a Leeds (Shipley actually) man was enjoying a pint but deriding the weak, flat southern beer compared with John Smiths. I hated to tell him that he was drinking Timothy Taylor’s ‘Landlord’ brewed in Keighley and that it was 4.3 abv compared to the JS at 3.8 – but someone had to.

Best regards
Terry
