The carriage on my hobbymat lathe moves up and down quite a bit. I have followed the instruction from the manual .It will tighten up and not move but the lead screw will not turn by hand. If I slacken the carriage off the lead screw will turn but there is so much play in the carriage. Seems a common problem with the hobbymat This is my first lathe so first dumb question is the carriage supposed to move up and down? Thanks

The answer to your question is ‘no, it should only move in forwards and reverse direction in the horizontal plane. There will always be some movement in other directions but it should be minimal and ideally close to zero.

The adjustment bolts for the carriage are very sensitive, it can often be the case that an extremely small adjustment is all that is required on the Hobbymat. But as NDIY says, the carriage should move in the horizontal plane only.

Hi Barry, I presume that the black plastic segment is still present and intact, which is in the top of the bore that the carriage slides along the bed on. Seen in the photo below with masking tape on.

There should also be one in the tailstock. However, as has been said, the adjustment is very finely balanced between being too tight or too loose. Otherwise you may have serious wear in one or the other or both.

              Regards Nick.

I described the adjustment procedure here:

                **LINK**

Getting the optimum setting of all three screws can take a little patience. Does the tailstock move smoothly with very little play? Is there obvious wear on the top of the bed?

The black plastic segment is there but the carriage and the segments are moving independant of each other giving the play. how does the black segment hold in place? Thanks

Just taken the carriage completely off and the black plastic bit is at a slight angle so when I tighten up only one side of the plastic will be touching and tht is what is locking it up and giving it the play. Cannot see how to move the plastic bit. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi Barry, I believe they are bonded in place. I could not remove those in my photo above, hence the masking tape on them before repainting.

                      Regards Nick.

I have managed to solve the problem. The plastic was held in by 2 steel pins. The plastic holes had become larger than the pins so was giving a slight movement. Turned the plastic around, drilled 2 new holes in the plastic, inserted more steel pins, the carriage has no play in it now and was easy tlo adjust. Hope this helps anyone else who has the same pronlem. Thank ypu.

Hi Barry, agree with MichaelG. I guess you didn't have much to loose, but +1 for giving it a go.

                            Regards Nick.

                              Hello

i had the same sort of problem.

when i bought the lathe the two plastic parts were loose and had no holes and pins as described here.

i drilled two 3mm holes in the support intomthe plastic and put in steel expandable pins.

also put some two component glue on the plastic.

The tailstock could not be drilled so i used only glue.

                              so far all works well

                              thanks
