      I'm very interested in steam turbines and steam engines. I have extensive experience with steam turbines (see profile). I made a model steam turbine of my design and tested it's performance. It was an easy test setup since there was a propeller available that gave the power at the maximum speed the model turbine was able to turn it. Also I sized the turbine nozzle to flow the maximum steam my boiler could produce with the pressure just below the maximum. I would like to make a similar test with a model steam engines and would appreciate and suggestions on making a test setup.

          Welcome to the forum. Any chance of a photo of your steam turbine?

              Welcome Turbine Guy. I too would like more info.

              If you have any questions, someone on here is bound to have an answer ('though it might not be the correct one!)

                Welcome to the Forum Turbine Guy!

                Recent issues of Model Engineer have been carrying some very interesting theory on steam turbines.

                  Thanks all of you for welcoming me.

                  Thor, I tried copying and pasting my pictures into this box. When I first tried pasting the picture a security box came up and I tried pasting the picture into the security box but nothing showed when I tried. I then copied the pictures into a Word file and tried copying and pasting the Word file. Same result. Since nothing showed when I tried pasting I don't know if anything was received. I guess somebody will need to walk me through this process.

                  Brian, let me know what additional information you would like. I have drawings of the turbine, an Excel file that I used to calculate the performance, and the test results. It is a very simple turbine never intended to be high performance. My initial goal was to design something simple enough that I could make it. My real interest was seeing how close the real performance was to my calculations.

                  Neil, I would like to read the recent turbine articles and will look at getting the Model Engineer and some back issues.

                      Hi Byron,

                      Thanks for the photos, Michael's link will explain how to post your photos in your post, I viewed them in your album. Do you have any photos of the "innards" of your turbines.

                          Hi Thor,

                          I just took the photos and don't have any of the inside parts. I would take the turbine apart except that the propeller is a press fit on the shaft. If I separate the propeller, I might loose the press fit. Is there a format I can send drawings in? My drawings are PDF files. If I can't send the drawings, I'll open the turbine up and make some more photos. The worst case is I would have to get a new propeller and they are not very expensive.

                            Thanks for posting the photos. PDF's are not accepted by the forum software, only JPG's. I will send you a message.

                              Hi Byron,

                              That's a neat little power unit.

                              In Adobe Acrobat Viewer you shoudl have a 'camera' icon, you can use this to take a 'picture' of a diagram or photo in a PDF and paste it inmto an imaging program like Paint and save it as a photo.

                              A bit long-winded but better than ruining a decent prop!

                              Neil;
