As above a lot of people dash in an buy a lathe then think about making something. If you are thinking about making a loco or traction engine have a look at one – 90% is not round so the lathe sits idle most of the time.

what actually started all this was heart over head purchase of a Moto Guzzi with a sheared exhaust header stud, that's removal can only be described as a comedy of errors. The current thought process is that if i have the right tools for the job I'd stand a fighting chance of not making it worse

Ian S C, your entirely right, I made some vice jaw liners from copper with only a handsaw, drill, file and several blisters.

Bazyle, a mill seems like to right start to me any thoughts one the Aciera F3 for sale

Those are nice mills if it is in as good condition as described. I can't say what a fair price is.
