Hi chaps I have a new to me boring head and it would be nice to get a bit of advice on how to use it correctly, not sure if the auto facing part of it can be made to go in reverse and there seams to be a way of setting the feed rate but I’m not sure how to do it, I have found some instructions for it on the Webb but still not 100% with it, any advice would be welcome .

I have one of these boring and facing heads for over 40 years use.

You can not make the feed go in reverse it is a case of stop and manual wind back. (unless I have never found out ?)

Feed rate is on my head at least 0.004" per rev with one of the hex key buttons in the top knurled ring turned clockwise to engage and 0.008" per rev with two engaged. During facing operations simply engage one or two of the feed buttons and with spindle running simply hold the knurled ring. Let go when you want to stop. Chris

Thanks Chris that’s kind of what I thought, although on this one there aren’t any feed buttons that I can see but there is an Allen bolt you can turn through 180 degrees that minght alter the feed rate do you think, I’ll try and get it on the mill and rig up a dti and see what I get.

              Thanks Alan.

Alan, looking at your pictures yours is a smaller version of mine. You are correct with turning the allen key 180 degrees to engage feed. This is what I reffered to as "buttons" a poor choice of terminology. I do have a smaller version like yours, must look for it and see if it has one or two feed rate positions like it's big brother.

Hi Chris Ive been out to mill and your right the button as you call it does give you two feed rates don’t know what there are exactly but they are different , and you do have to manually wind it back so now I know all is good, I just didn’t want to damage it with not knowing how to use it correctly, thanks for takeing the time to help me out much appropriated.

                  Regards Alan,

Alan, enjoy the new piece of kit. If it helps at all I only ever use mine on the courser feed, that is with both positions engaged. At boring/facing speeds the fine feed position can tend to let the tool rub.
