Flame resistant material

I am looking for some flame resistant material which must be a few millimeters thick, checked out manifold wrap will this do the job or is this just insulation. I have some white cotton wool looking material which is flame proof but is now falling apart and not what I need. Any ideas please.

Fibreglass cloth works to some extent, it is used by plumbers as the superior asbestos cloth has been outlawed for many years. A fierce flame from a bolwtorch will melt the glass fibres, but you do not say exactly what sort of flame will be present. Repair kits for car bodys have various types of fibreglass in them. There are also types of kevlar cloth which is fireproof.

How about cutting up some of those fake logs used on gas fires? Can't remember what they are made of but it is definitely fire proof we have them on our gas fire

I like the fire blanket suggestion, you would certainly have a good size to cut up.

I got some stuff from a firm advertising itself as 'refractory engineers'. They called it 'ceramic paper' It's about 3mm thick but has little strength

Ceramic paper is wonderful stuff! I use it as firebox insulation in my small stationary engines. It's a much better choice than asbestos. Available in various thicknesses from 1mm upwards.

Other materials to consider are Nomex and plumber's mat. You can get plumber's mat from B&Q or any good hardware store. Here at Генри Конструкторское Бюро we use Nomex to protect parachutes from the ejection charge on research rockets.
