      Hi all

I recently purchased a collet chuck and some collets from arc eurotrade. I now have a need for collets in the range of 20 to 30mm but the biggest from Arc is 20mm.

Does anybody know if 20mm is the limit with the collet chuck for the mini lathe, and of that isn't the case, where might I get some bigger collets?

      Thanks

ER40 collets go to 30mm and can be bought with square of hexagon bodies to go in lathe chucks. The square in an independent four jaw chuck would be the best bet, as you can get them running properly. There are also MT3 holders with a drawbar thread or tang.

This one has the drawbar thread:**LINK**

To get up to 32mm you need an ER40 collet chuck. ArcEuro have advice about ER32 chuck sizes for various mini-lathes here, and details of their ER40 chucks here. Depending on which mini-lathe you have, the 100mm ER40 might fit, otherwise you'll have to make a backplate.

Are collets essential? The alternative is to get slick with a 4-jaw and DTI. Not as convenient as collets, but they can be set very accurately.

Dead right, SOD, I have an ER25 plate which fits straight on the lathe, its never been used, I'm not afraid to use a four jaw chuck.

Thanks guys. I use the four jaw alot but the collet is still considerably faster and easier to protect the work from crushing jaws.

I use an ER 40 collet chucks in my Boxford on back plate or in one of my milling machine and ER32 in the other milling machine.

                      Hi Jim,

A 20mm collet is normally the largest collet you get for an ER 32 chuck, I have an oversize 25mm collet for my ER 32 chuck, it is a bit shorter than the smaller capacity collets I have, but works OK. I got my 25mm collet from Gloster's Ebay shop, as mentioned by Jason.
