Hi guys new to the site and first time posting.

Im looking for some information on where to purchase an Eclipse No.244 flat tapping wrench. These seem to be very hard to find.
Does anyone know a retailer I could buy one or any equivalent I could purchase must be a flat one though.

      Thanks in advance.

Keep an eye out on the second hand tool dealers stands, I have a couple of different sized flat ones ones that came from dealers at shows.

I don’t think they are produced anymore, but they turn up on eBay every now and then.

They aren’t very common, I have about 3 which I acquired over about 20 years!

These haven’t been made for decades but my example is my favourite tap wrench for smaller stuff. eBay  or tool shows etc are your best bet. Some on eBay now!!

Lots on ebay. Looks like a nice little project to make one.

Please could you quantify “lots”. I think we occasionally aspire to be engineers here and ‘lots’ is not a well-specified term.

Perhaps you could give the eBay listing number of two of those ‘lots’ that are live at the time of this posting.

Please make sure you show only the 244 model as requested.

Here’s a photo of a couple I made some 60+ years ago — Eclipse were too expensive for a poor apprentice back then !!!  They were made as functional tools and have been in use ever since, made from gauge plate

Bought one when I was an apprentice, but I found the T type to be easier to use in getting a thread vertical to the hole.   Noel.

Does anyone know when they changed from the bright finish to the blackened one as shown in the ebay link? My 245 is bright although my larger one being cast just has a black finish but some of the smaller ones are also dark.

Eclipse weren’t shy of providing exactly what you needed:

Eclipse 244 and 245 were available in the silver finish in 1978, I was given a £50 tool voucher (quite generous then) by my employer as a reward for finishing my apprenticeship and passing final exams (by some miracle) . These were among the items I selected. Still using most of the tools I got to this day, lost a couple to light fingered +1%&!!s over the years.

The 2 shown by Jason I bought in 1968 or the early 70s. Noel.

There seems to have been 3 different finishes. Bright nickel, satin nickel and black.

The satin nickel looks the oldest to me and the black one the most modern.

If it’s the same one , I think you’ll find it actually went for £61.04 plus postage ! 😱.

I think its all a bit worrying and I might lay a bet on how many times it will get used in the next 20 years.
