      Hi

My belt is shredded on my eagle grinder. I have started getting the spindle out but it seems stuck. Before I start whacking things I thought I’d ask.

I have everything off that looks like it should come off, the plates at the front and back. The Timken bearing is moving at the front. I think it needs a tap at the back to encourage the bearing off the spindle. Anyone have any thoughts?

      thanks

      Steve

They assemble differently depending on which model you have. This was mine:

Look after those bearings. I tried – and failed – to find replacements. Ended up using modern metric ones.

Thanks Pete…. Looks like you’ve answered my question presuming it is a similarly designed model. A tap towards the front should do it.

The front Timken bearing one mine looks as good as new. I will be very careful with it.

          cheers

          Steve

That pulley was very very tight. I got it hot and it was still tight. If you’re gotta tap it out, use suitable protection on the end of the shaft because the slightest burr and it’s not coming out of the rear bearing, hence my use of the puller.

              It’s out 👍

unbelievable amount of gunk. New belt ordered. Next step getting it back together and working.

The original Hoffmann precision bearings in our Herbert Junior were trashed long before it passed in to our hands. The original bearings are still available new although, from memory, they’re something like £300 each.

Using average grade SKF bearings didn’t make any difference to the finish, as it’ll easily turn out work with a mirror finish, the one thing that was a struggle was finding bearings with the correct contact angle.

                  ok… new belt coming today.

see pic for the assembly at the rear of the spindle.  It looks like the bolt that goes into the thread at the far rear of the spindle presses on the plate (bottom) which adds pressure to the spindle at the back.

Any ideas on how to set this tension? Moderately tighten, run for a bit and check not too hot?
