Hi. I have a question about the position of the Displacement lubricator on a stationary engine. I have seen many pictures on the net with the Displacement lubricator mounted on the side of the steam chest. Does this position work. I thought the idea was to have it in the steam supply pipe so the passing of the steam drags some of the oil with it.

      Thanks

      Garry

A small amount of steam condenses in the lubricator body therefore displacing some oil to do the lubrication.

Common position on traction engines as there is usually no pipe to fit a displacement lubricator to.as steam comes up through the cylinder to the regulator chest and then onto the valve chest.

It's not really dragged out by the steam. The cooler lubricator will collect condensation that settles to the bottom and the lighter oil then flows out into the chest or pipe

Taking this topic opportunity, for a 5" gauge loco what do you guys think is best option, displacement or pump type?

Having trouble visualising how much oil a displacement type holds, doesn't look much.

Personally I think for that gauge a mechanical pump would be best.

Thanks Jon, confirms what I thought really.
