I'm getting ready to have another go on the Austin Seven rejuvenation saga, now that weather has made working in the Carport more conducive.

I need suggestions please on getting that vice mounted, and due to space limitatikns, am thinking of a horizontally hinged/pivoting frame, with loose but attached bracing to the floor.

I will only need to use the vice if hefty work needs doing, so allowing it to swing down is my thought.

Vice in question:

It's been lurking on the Mitco base for years, and now time for use if I need to persuade car parts parts to behave.

How the heck do you get a singe word for that link?

Hi Geoff,
To get a link in the form of a single word (Or group of words.) just highlight the text (Drag the curser across it.) that is going to perform the link then click on the link button (left hand button in the third box fron the left on the lower line of buttons.) then paste in the URL of the link. For example – Link to Austin 7 forum. I highlighted Austin 7 then pasted in the link URL from your post.

With Petrifying Prisoner I tried everything and managed to get the address to appear as "Link" but no chance with a descriptive name.

iOS doesn't make it easy. Much prefer bbcode.

Thanks for giving me the kick I needed, as I am always thinking up the most elaborate solution. Not sure if I have L but do have hollow square tube

40lbs (18kg) when I weighed yesterday I like to think that I'm aufait with the two systems, but obviously not.

The one that really gets me is when PS or kW is used for the power of cars engines, instead of proper HP.

When SA went metric they did that and it got up my nose and still does.

It's done!

Must be one of, if not, my quickest project.

Not side-tracked.

Decided to try a Vice Stand first, using what I had available, instead of something hinged on the wall.

Top plate is 19"x12"X1/4"

Tube is 3"Ø X1/8"

Used my CT-312 TIG in anger for the first time, 'Walking-The-Cup" welding the top plate to the tube.

Only time will tell if the stand is suitable or not.

Your wood work vice looked familiar, went out and had a look at mine "Record 52 1/2A", I wonder where the 1/2A comes from, I suppose there is some difference.

Is the stand going to be braced against a wall or some such solid item, it doesn't look too stable for filing etc, and the wood vice would not be up to too much work with the plane.

Have not used it in anger yet, but will post results.

Feels quite secure on that 18" CI base, BUT the problem is finding a wobble free area on the floor for it.

May try with one or more bolts that can be screwed through the base from the top to stop the wobble, if I cannot find a suitable area on the floor.

Bracing to the wall will be done if needed, but the wall hinging method is still on the cards if the stand does not live up to my expectations.

Heaven forbid.

I will use it so that if it does, it only makes a dent in the concrete.

I'm not building a tank, so hopedully that won't happen, but I "never say never" as I've learned.
