      Hi all,

Just got back from a large tool auction and in the lots I purchased there is a full set of Imperial collets which I am going to dispose of on EBay.

Naturally I wish to describe these accurately but have never had any of this size and design.

I wonder if anyone can shed some light for me on the correct ID of these.collets 1.jpg

They all have the number 2804 on them with a logo that looks like the CC of Coco Chanel! smiley

Imperial sizes from 1/32" up to 3/4"; the parallel shank diameter is 25mm and the external diameter of the threaded end is 23mm; 33mm maximum diameter at the bell end.

      Any help most welcome.

      Regards,

      Martin

Nice haul. Should do plenty of tool holding with them. I am in the canaries at the moment and have brought Harold halls milling book to read. Even though I have s bit of experience in milling it's a good read with plenty of advice on milling tool holders.

              Thanks Jason,

checked the link but I guess they must be old stuff because the number and sizes do not show up.

Too bad you did not give more informations: total length, angle of head, keyway or not, thread metric or imp., normal or sawtooth…

In my eyes they look suspiciously like W25 collets. .

Some numbers for these: length 97.6 mm, head dia. 33.7 mm, thread (very special! sawtooth) dia, 24.7mm / 15 tpi with angles 45/5 deg., head angle 15°, keyway 5 mm

                Hope this can help?

                Regards, HansR.

                  Martin,

Crawford collets no 2804 were/are used on Smart & Brown lathes, and may be specific to those machines.

So they won't be in a current Crawford list .

I should try the Yahoo S & B Group for confirmation

If they are a Crawfords collet they will have a left hand thread on them.

Also is it a 'normal' thread or one with one side more angled than the other ?

                          John,

Could you please elaborate upon that rather sweeping statement ?

I have Crawford Collets in several styles, none of which has a left hand thread.

                          Thanks

                              Hi Martin

2804 are the collets for a Smart & Brown model A, I think they also fit the model L plain turning and capstan lathes, I don't know about the others. The ones for my Model A are all marked 2804. I think they are a specific collet for these lathes, slightly bigger than a 3C and smaller than a 5C.

The sizes will be imperial, the 25mm diameter is 63/64 which is the spindle bore, the thread is approx 0.9" diameter probably 29/32, and 24tpi RH.

                              Hope this helps

                              Trevor

OK, just measured them properly on a good mitutoyo mic.

The parallel diameter is 0.9834" and tghe diameter across the treads od is 0.9033".

Thread form looks totally symetrical to my eye under a x10 lens. Thread is RH

Looks like Trevor is on the money!

Martin C: send me a PM with a sensible offer that you are happy with to include the 2 index blocks as they are no good without the collets.

Thanks to all for the help.

I have dug out an old print out of the Crawford Collets products and scanned it to a PDF. There are 29 pages with dimensions and capacities listed by manufacturer so I was wondering if there was a good place to put this file or is it just a case of email it to people if they ask for it?

Not sure if the Photo Album will allow PDF but if you save the scans as jpg they should upload to your Album.

As Emgee sugests … the album will only accept jpg

If that conversion is inconvenient for you, I would be happy to do it.

                                      PM sent.

I could convert to jpg format but there are 29 pages and it is probably best kept as one file. If someone has a web site that could make it available to anyone searching for collet dimensions for lots of manufacturers' machines that would be the best place for it. I have copied the Smart & Brown section to a single page made a new table with the data in it and put it in the files section of the Yahoo group for those lathes. It would be a lot of work to do that for all the other makes. As I write this it occurs to me that it may be something that could be put on the lathes.co.uk web site. I will ask Tony about it.
