Hi – The current MEW No.309 refers on Page 56 "On the Wire" to the LH threaded boss or ring nut being used as a means of ejecting the chuck by tightened up against the quill. I have the identical model on a M2 taper but when I acquired the tool the guy made no mention of this use of the ring but said that it was there to make the whole assembly more rigid. Until now, I have never given it any further thought. Anyone have any further ideas on its use?

And also makes it much easier to remove from the taper…..

            Regards,

Before trying to use the ring as an aid for removal, be sure there are plenty of overlapping threads between the ring and the chuck body. I don't see why it cannot be used to assist the normal tapping on the drawbar to break the taper, but would hesitate to use it on it's own, Clarkson only intended it to stiffen up the wet noodle MT2 in particular.

Will have to look at my chuck and see if it has the "damping ring"

One thing to remember if using the threaded ring, you must back it off so that there is an air gap between the quill and the ring when you tighten the drawbar. It would not be good to have the drawbar pulling up against the ring before the taper was tight. To use the ring as intended, it would only need a couple of foot pounds torque to work properly.

I have the same unit. With the wet noodle MT2 taper. I have never needed to use the damper ring to extract. It always comes out easy as the rest of my tooling does. I have never read anywhere that the ring helps extraction. But i guess if you have one that is really stuck. It would not harm to try it.

                    Steve.

I find Old Mart's description of the Morse 2 fitting as "a wet noodle" a little harsh as Ihave always found it to be perfectly satisfactory when used on my bench top mill and in the Myford lathe for that matter. Obviously it has to be used within its limits but surely that is true with all our pieces of kit.

The Smart & Brown model A has MT2 in the tailstock and there are times when I wish it was at least MT3. When the museum was left a Tom Senior light vertical in a will, I was in the fortunate position, having a lathe and mill, to convert the spindle from MT2 to R8 when it was refurbished. That Clarkson ring to stiffen it was deemed important as that size can hold 5/8" and 16mm shank cutters, and some of mine are 20mm diameter.
