John, have a look on ebay, loads there and I think

that Machine Mart sell motors cheaper than £400.

              John,

For less than £400 Transwave will supply you with a 3/4 hp 3ph motor, remote control and VFD.

Search ebay for 16mm shaft motors and see if one suits. Note a 3 phase motor and VFD is well below £400 so don't dismiss this as an option.

I have just seen the other thread regarding this lathe. I wonder if you have bought a machine that has had a three phase motor fitted already. The standard stop start wiring would be disconnected if this was the case. Single phase motors tend to be defined by rpm and 3 phase by poles.

I now have a question, I was told by MM that the shaft was 15 mm can somebody confirm that it is 16 mm, my new 3ph motor is 14 and I have to make a sleeve.

Hi John, I used to have a clarke lathe/mill, I changed the motor for a 3 phase to use with an inverter, as far as I know still have the old motor which you are welcome to have, will have a look tomorrow and let you know.

I should add that working in the industrial fan industry we use a huge amount of motors, mainly 3 phase, but 400 quid for such a small motor is scandalous.

You can buy motors with a 19mm shaft for a fraction of the price, can the pulley bore be enlarged?

Machine mart sell this one for £96 if you can find a way to get the pulley bored out (assuming it meets the duty cycle requirement).

I have this if you are interested. I took it off my myford to fit a 3 ph motor, it's in perfect condition & is wired up with a reversing switch & stop start station, 3/4hp 240v ac. All ready to go. Only needs a plug fitting. Can be seen working. I'm in Leeds so pick up only. £130 would snap my arm off.
