buying an unknown boiler

Hi I have come across for sale a boiler that fits my requirements pretty well question is it has no cert or plans with it…………… How much of a problem would this be for getting it tested could it be reversed engineered to show this?

I'm looking at it as it would save me a lot epensce I can't afford its a simple marine style boiler 150mm od tube 32 8mm tubes 3mm thick plate extra tube slides on for firebox same for the smoke box going to fire it with 3 2" burners the boiler itself is 370mm long

Once both ends added perfect for my model

What are your tthoughts on this one thanks and best wishes mike

Provided you can get it for less than the scrap value of copper you won't loose out.

Was it designed for gas firing or solid fuel?

Are you capable of doing the calculations to show that it meets the requirements.

Have you asked your boiler inspector what he feels abouit it as it will be him who says yay or nay

This is the boiler in question would be suitable for me as is my guess would be that it was designed to be gas fired what do you reckon?

I bought an abandoned project which included a boiler kit off eBay The scrap value of the boiler bits was well in excess of what I paid, until the boiler was silver soldered. The combination of copper, brass and bronze reduced the value to that of brass.

The brass was not in contact with any water/steam, in case there are any who think that brass was used in this boiler making.

Tube plates look to be well soldered, bit messy around some of the fittings but solder looks to have flowed OK.

Where will you mount the cylinder as those two clacks are in the way, probably won't work too well being sideways anyhow.

Also what about a thickening pad to screw the cylinder to you can't get inside the barrel now to add one

Steam dome is right in teh way of your conrod.

Ahh thanks for the reply Jason this is were of could work quite well for me because my cylinder doesn't mount directly to the boiler but needs a pipe from the boiler to the cylinder so that could work quite well and as to the steam dome well that should fit as well with just cutting one simple hole in a plate on the model.

ThThe only problem I for see from the pics of the boiler is that the safety valves would need putting side by side to suite the model I'm building

I acquired an abandoned project which included a boiler kit. The kit consisted of copper, bronze and brass parts. I was told that once it had been silver soldered, the scrap value would go from the (mainly) copper value to that of brass which is considerably less.

Before anyone comments, the brass parts will not come into contact with steam or water.
