What Neil had to say recently about Content. Here

If MEW content is not coming in he can’t publish what he does not have. Also time of year means you will get articles about how far a loco will go on a teaspoon of coal. I expect there will be some MMEX reports filling the pages, apparently not much home made tooling on show so expect more photos of models. Could that be a sign that people are making models and not tools, the other forums HMEM, MEM, Mech, all have very little “tool” content

I have always considered tools as a means to an end and not an end in their selves.

I think Jason has already commented on it but the lack of interest on the forum in MMEX saddens me. If I was Neil I would take note and do the obvious – not report on MMEX at all.

Regarding the copyright problem, our long-standing principle is of an author designing and building a project (usually a complex model), having drawings, photographs and instructions published in the magazine; then finding a retailer for the drawings and raw materials.

Is Kesley trying to kill this?

Assuming the design to be a working miniature of an old machine appropriately modified for construction and function, or is a project original to its maker, if Kelsey demands all rights to all material submitted to it:

To whom does the drawings copyright then belong?

The designer, the plan-set retailer… or Kelsey?

To whom does the design right belong?

            The designer… or Kelsey?

What if a builder/owner submits his own photographs to both his club magazine or web-site, or some “social-medium” other than this forum, having already sent them to MEW?

            +++++

I explored Kelsey Media’s own web-sites and Wikipedia entry. The latter omits MEW and Radio Control Models & Electronics, the only two titles dedicated to anyone creating anything; excluding farming and amateur-gardeners’ magazines, and a couple on motor-vehicle maintenance.

Woodwork, metalwork, computing and CAD/CAM, electronics generally (apart from a shoppers’ review magazine), model-railways, any models not in MEW and RCME remit, painting & pottery, cookery, household DIY…  all excluded.

Even knitting, needlework and related, despite the “Alpacas” magazine. If we cannot make a spinning-wheel we cannot use all that soft camelid hair!

Most of those hobbies have or had their journals, but is Kelsey Media unable to understand the desire to create things? Perhaps that dangerous desire has been covered in KM’s home-hypondriacs’ glossy Psychologies [sic].

If a hobby find its hard to attract newcomers, maybe this profits-led suppression is one of the many reasons.

At least Kelsey Media is a British company, not owned by the take-and-destroy “venture capital” spivs in Wall Street or Shanghai.

Why would a “venture capital” want to own ME&W? I can only see one reason for Kelsey owning ME&W.

It is really quite simple. As a first time author you submit your wonderful article with a covering letter explaining that it is submitted for one time publishing with all right retained by the author, etc whatever conditions you want.
Their admin/secretary who is just that with no technical understanding whatsoever will send back their term asking you to sign them.
You respond by reminding them of your initial letter. It is up to them to accept your terms it they are keen enough to need your article. If it was crap they won’t bother – that is down to you.

That “long established” tradition went out the window years ago. I think the last set of drawings published separately were for the Nemett Lynx by Malcom stride back in about 2012. That is the last time Myhobbystore added a new set of drawings, don’t know when the last loco was added before that.

There was very little tooling at MMEX this year. Sometimes there is some, and sometimes not.

I like making tools to a good standard of finish, and maybe one day I will have something to exhibit.

                      JA –

I didn’t say a money-trader would want to own a title. It would want the company publishing the titles.

                      Bazyle –

I don’t think literary and technical quality would count for anything in that argument.

The administrator need not understand the article. Accepting or rejecting an article on contents is for the specific magazine’s editors; but acceptance or rejection of the Terms & Conditions in any across-board transaction may well be a YES/NO question handled by some clerk obeying Procedures not knowledge, nor initiative.

                      Jason –

I didn’t know that. It’s worrying, suggesting no-one is preparing plans for publication. They don’t have to be of locomotives, either, and it’s not the trade’s fault if it doesn’t receive any such material.

                      Charles –

Is there any significant lack of interest in MMEX on this Forum? Yes or no, your suggestion that it need not be covered in the magazine is hardly going to help!
