I have just perused the latest edition of ME&W and found nothing that interested me.

You could always start writing some interesting articles for ME&W yourself… unless Neil writes stuff himself, he’s pretty well reliant on other folk submitting items.

Can I offer a vote of thanks to all those unsung heroes in model engineering societies who produce their newsletters? It must be like getting blood out of a stone sometimes.

Maybe you need to broaden your interests. Last week I was sufficiently impressed after I read one article to write thanks to the author in the ‘what you did today’ thread (as what I did for a couple of hours was read part of the latest edition.
Also one of the Club reports mentioned an interesting article in the Sydney club newsletter. I initially thought what use is that then looked on their website and there are years of back issues available.

Its a funny world, often there is nothing that I read but I actually read two articles in the latest, thanks to Julie and Rod. Three if you include proof reading my own.

A first for a long while for me was two interesting articles in the current issue !

Just goes to show that you really can’t please everyone.

I think the latest edition is average. Some articles are interesting, some are of no interest and very few are exciting. I see no reason to terminate my subscription.

Also I have to ask Andrew and John, what interests you?

Please don’t give me “write an article for ME&W”. It is a commercial enterprise, there to make a profit. New authors lose the rights to their work since the latest takeover.

I agree that you can’t please everyone, I am not complaining, just observing that there was nothing of interest in the current magazine. Surely any feedback must be useful to the editor.

                    Andrew.

It would be a lot more useful if you said what does interest you, otherwise, how will the editor know what people want or don’t want.

Neil is also working to get Kelsey to use the old terms so new authors will retain rights.

What if any interest would there be in a powerful spark eroder able to do a lot more than just get a broken tap out ? It was made largely out of the bits from an old one armed bandit and cost very little.  Noel.

Noel it would depend on the availability of other old one armed bandits, if they are hard to come by then although it may be a good read it may not be so practical if others want to make one.

I suspect it’s primarily the solenoids that will be used, and possibly the hefty power supply, so substitutes should be available without raiding an amusement arcade.

Noel, that sounds an interesting project. I have built a small spark eroder and am sold on the topic. A very powerful one would make an excellent project that would keep me busy. I have plenty of hefty power supplies, solenoids etc so I don’t think I need to look for a one armed bandit!

                                        Andrew.

P.S. I seem to have trod on a few toes with my initial post. Let me make it quite clear, my comment was meant as an observation, not a criticism.  I subscribe to ME&W simply to support the forum which I find much more interesting than the magazine.

Just as a taster it will put a specially shaped 3/8″ hole in 3mm stainless in 6 mins. For those who buy cheap boxes of carbide tips it will put neat screw holes in them for mounting. Looks like that’s my christmas sorted then. The bit that matters and would be expensive is the transformer that has 5,12, 33 and 50V at several amps. The power resistor is a piece of electric fire element shortened to 10 Ohms, draw slides provide the precise movement controlled by a dc motor/gearbox and lead screw. Till later  Noel.

PS as for Bobs comment – I used 2 transformer to give 66V at 8 Amps !

Going back to the original topic, I thought the latest edition was OK. One article I didn’t bother reading,  I never do read that particular author, but the rest of it was reasonablg interesting.

Authors do get paid, but not a lot I will agree.  To commission someone to write would cost a lot more, price would go up, circulation down, end of magazine.

I date from before the latest IPR terms. I’m not sure I’d be willing to sign up to the new ones.

Ask Neil. They are more suited to when Kelsey commissions an article and Neil is working on getting them to use the old Mortons one.

This is the bit that applies

                                                  6. Publishing Rights:
You hereby irrevocably assign to Kelsey (by way of present assignment of future rights) all rights, title and interest including all intellectual property and proprietary rights (including copyright) in the Work that exist anywhere in the world for the full term of such rights (including all extensions and renewals thereof). You agree to do such things and execute such documents as Kelsey reasonably requires to give effect to such assignment.
                                                  7. You hereby waive the benefit of any moral rights (or any analogous rights) which you would otherwise be entitled to under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 or pursuant to any equivalent legislation anywhere in the world.

For comparison, here’s the Mortons media wording:

                                                  1. You hereby give Mortons Media Group Limited (“Mortons”) a licence to reproduce the Material once

                                                  print and/or digital format.
                                                  2. You warrant that you own or have the right to licence the Material to Mortons and that Mortons’ use of it in

party. You waive the benefit of any moral rights to which you might otherwise be entitled to in relation to the
Material in respect only of Mortons’ permitted use hereunder.
                                                  3. You agree to allow Mortons the right (i) to store, edit and adapt the Material for publication purposes and

I, too, have been pondering the question raised by the OP. My active interest is in the “W” rather than the “ME” and, since the amalgamation, I am beginning to feel that I am getting half a magazine for the price of a whole one.

Thanks to Jason for giving us the copyright texts. The contrast between the two is rather stark, Kelsey’s seeming to be typical of today’s all-too common one-sided bits of legalese which, whilst offensive in principle, probably doesn’t matter in practice. If it did matter it might be possible to challenge it as an unfair contract.

I write this expecting it to be taken down.

When Kelsey took over the title I had a good look at their website, particularly the 100+ titles they had. A lot were dormant, no longer published, titles associated with car and motorcycle clubs. I wondered why. It could be that these clubs were given an offer that they should have refused and after a year or two dumped their magazine and started afresh. I have to admit that this is from my memory, I do not have time to revisit websites.

As for ME&W, its coverage has to be broad and is probably too broad. It could be trying to appeal to too many interests. I used to rebuild motorcycles but now make models and, then, would not have expected one magazine covering both interests. Obviously, the way forward would be too split the title and go back to two magazines. Equally obviously, there probably is not the customer base to do this. I have a horrid feeling that the above also applies to this forum.
