Does anyone know how to convert a solid steel pinion in to a lantern pinion. I am perfectly capable of making a lantern one but don’t have the equipment to make a steel one. Measurements etc.

      Thanks, David.

From Malcolm wilds book on Wheel & Pinion cutting in horology.

The pins are located on the Pitch circle of the  pinion. The pin diameter is 1.05Mod where the number of pins is 10 or less, and 1.25Mod where the number of teeth is greater than 10.

Lantern pinions must always be the driven member, and are normally only used with cycloid gears.

        Hope tis helps.

Peter is that 1.05MOD or 1.05 x the MOD of the pinion gear.

I would have thought that as a gears tooth profile gets larger or smaller then the diameter of the pin that fits between two teeth needs to change proportionally.

            So a 0.5mod 10T pinion would need 0.525mm pins (1.05 x 0.5) but a 1.0mod 10T pinion would need 1.05mm pins.

Yes Jason it’s 1.05 x the MOD of the gears. 1.05MOD is how Wild writes it. Exactly as you compute provided the pinion has 10 or fewer teeth/pins. Above 10 it’s 1.25 x MOD.
