Something brand new to me, but this was something I ran across today. Adjustable for run out ER collet nuts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcpxMP9zVRQ

However I’m not convinced the average ER collet nut could be drilled and tapped to try something like it. That might be something that has to be done before the collet nut is hardened and finish ground. Buying there collet nuts might be the only option?

Yes I’d 100% agree with you Bernard. I’d bet that loses more sales than it ever helps. Some businesses and sales staff seem to not understand it’s not the buyers who should be required to put the extra effort in.

Tapping reamers true, then fully tightening works for me

I made my own one of these, i.e. drilled and tapped the sides of a collet nut and inserted set screws. Whether I adjusted/tightened the set screws before or after fully tightening down the collet nut, it didn’t produce any measurable alteration in TIR. The positioning of the set screws was bang on, as far as I could tell. I must have done something wrong, but I don’t know what.

Probably makes more sense on a CNC that they show where the nut can adjust the tool and then the whole lot goes into the auto feed and may not get touched again for some time.

In the hobby wokshop most of us don’t have a dedicated ER holder for every tool so having to dial in every time a cutter is changed would be quite time consuming.

The size of the nut would also put me off. Again not a problem on a CNC as you don’t need to see what you are doing but even with a DRO I like to see approx where I am and will often change to my ER16 from the 32 for delicate work or if I have clamps or the vertical rotary table getting in the way of a standard nut let alone one so much larger.
