Looking for something else at the museum, I chanced upon what I initially thought was a hole punch. The hole was filled with something like wood but there was no relief hole. The bore is offset to one side within 1/32″ of the wall of the shaft and an external taper is turned to the tip of the hole which is 1/8″ diameter. The hole is drilled to just beyond the grub screw which takes a 1/16″hex key. The length is 5.16″, diameter 0.287″ and the square indents are at a pitch of 0.138″. The rack indents look like they are intended to be length adjusters for a screw to sit in, so the tool is fitted in a bore of a larger part. A letter B is stamped in the shaft, and the square rack indents are also pressed in, not machined.

Looks like a Telescopic Blade Holder for a deburring tool (Noga?) to me.

Agree – those dimples on the shank are identical – normally they come with a sleeve ball detent collet-thing on the business end but I’d guess that this has been made/modified for a specific application..

It cannot hold a deburring end because the grubscrew only holds the last 1/8″ or less of whatever goes down the bore, but the wall thickness and the shortness of the grubscrew mean it would be just underflush of the shaft when secured.

..has it been re-purposed as a ?scriber or pick? ..note the offset bore and witness mark to indicate the ‘rack’..

OM, yes, it does and it is quite old, I’ve had it ?35+ years and it was well-used then – I don’t think it’s a Noga – the end cap has a proper screw thread and the mouldings are really crisp and clean.

I’m pretty sure it was given to me as a ‘rare’ gift before they were widely available and probably came via a biking acquaintance from Yeovil, which might explain the age/similarity to yours..

Yours and Old Marts are probably VARGUS brand parts.

Thanks, everyone, for finding the answer, it looks like mine has been modified to produce that tapered end which makes it harder to identify.

Is there any room in the handle for spare deburring ends?
