Imperial Bearing Surprise!

So, according to my parts manual I need a Hoffmann S9 7/8″id x 1.7/8″od x 3/8″ bearing. Found that KLNJ7/8 is the replacement, ordered a cheapo one from ebay and it arrives with a width of 1/2″ not 3/8″. After a lot of hunting I have found that the KLNJ7/8 replacement part is 3/8″ wide as an open bearing, but 1/2″ wide when it is a -2RS or -ZZ. Never in 50 years of engineering have I seen the same part number used for two different sized parts.

Does this surprise other people or has this ‘snippet’ just passed me by?

Aernt you changing the part no when you add 2RS or ZZ to it?

Is the original bearing 3/8″ wide and NO seals.

If so, surely if you ask for KLNJ7/8, that’s exactly what you should receive..
