Can anyone recommend a UK supplier of sheetmetal (Steel) cut to size?

      Thanks

Depends where you are, but I find Mackays of Cambridge very very good for cut to size.

You do pay a bit more than the cost per area vs a sheet, and I've found long cutting lists add to the price than if you rationalised things down to a few longer, practical to handle lengths – but I've saved a bit since as I've now got a 6X4 bandsaw and plasma cutter…

Other than that, you're probably onto online stockists. I haven't found one yet that is straightforward on pricing – it looks good until you get to the checkout and then they normally kill you on delivery costs.

Try M-Machine … they have cut to size for me in the past, good service and good price.

Cliffords motor spares in School Rd, Hove, stock ready cut sheets of steel. I wonder how many other independant motor spares businesses around the country do this? Could be worth a try in your area, anyone looking for thin sheet steel in varying thicknesses.

                    Gentlemen,

All my sheet steel comes from dismantled Dexion racking, not sure of the gauge but shelving is one thickness and the back panels are thinner. Most of the time its cost me nothing, I just wait until my company clears the stores smiley

                        How about:

                        2 off 63 mm wide X 191 mm long

                        1 off 63 mm wide X 150 mm long

                        1 off 100 mm wide X 150 mm long

                        4 off 35 mm wide X 127 mm long

Thickness ?? .25 mm to 3 mm ?? Unless its available in SWG, AWG, or imperial. Ian S C

Thanks for the mention of Mackays as I didn't kow they did metal. **LINK**

"Please do the chap whose going to cut it <a favour>, and work in metric." cheeky don't see the problem there but can we have some tolerences? wink

I wonder if Deltic is building a 5in bogie.

For such a small amount I'd just buy a 300×300 sheet which is what most of our suppliers seem to do and cut them with a saw and tidy up by hand or mill if you have one.

If you do buy it in also consider how you want it cut, eg will a sheared edge be acceptable or would lazer of waterjet be better. And as mentioned above what tollerance, maybe allow a bit for final finishing.

And if it is a bogie make sure your cross piece length allows for the fact you will be getting metric material and your imperial lengths may be a fraction short.

If you can put the pieces into a .DXF file then you can just e-mail it to get a quote which makes it easier for the supplier as most have computerised machines these days.
