just fired my 5" for the first time on the bench. Getting the fire to go was very difficult. When it got to 60psi I opened the regulator, it ran but emptied the boiler of most of its water in less than a minute, spewing it all out the chimney! It doesnt have superheaters but what a mess!! It will end up on ebay soon me thinks!

Its quite likely there is a lot of muck from welding/soldering etc in there and its throthing up a lot and priming. Give it a good flush out and run a few more times.

I agree with Jason my Burrel took three firings before it settled down (especially if you put too much water treatnment in Ooops )

It took me quite a while to figure out how to fire my little 3-1/2" gauge Tich. Now, it's fun – not frustrating so keep at it.

Priming on big locomotives (full size) was a real problem if it happened; fortunately never to me when firing. Drain the water from the boiler, (what's left!) and fill it up, and try again. Once the impurities that cause priming are out of the boiler, you'll be ok.

There's nothing wrong with a challenge, because, once you get past it, you'll feel great.

No loco experience, but the first time the safety valve lifted on my little boiler, it shot a load of hot water on the ceiling of my workshop.
