Oil change in a Chester MF42B

Hi, first of all I’d like to point out that I know nothing about engineering, lathes or milling machines but have bought a ‘chester mf42b’ to have a play and try and learn. I’m more of a woodworker, so will be asking alot of questions on this forum, probably silly ones, if thats ok!

I want to change the oil in the headstock,before I use the machine but can’t find the ‘ drain plug’. I can find where you put the oil in and I can see the oil level window but not where to drain the old oil.

Also what oil should I use.

Any information would be appreciated

Hi

Sounds like the old Model A series multipurpose machine sold by Chester UK. Have you tried posting on the Chester UK forum? Even though you bought the machine second hand they are always willing to help and even if Chester can’t help directly then there will probably be others that can.

Hi,

the mf42b is a muti-purpose machine. There were two models, A and B which were the same except the B models milling head could be elevated and lowered, and was apparently the more popular model. They also did a longer bed model.

It is quite possible that there is no provision for draining the oil, but like Martin says try posting on the Chester forum.

Hi

Try looking at this site it is similar to the model B and has freely available manuals. I know for some of the equipment the part numbers are exactly the same as Chester’s. It may help, the other alternative is to syphon the oil out and use a good gear oil as a replacement.

I owned one of these some time ago, from what I recall, there is an oil drain behind one of the gears on the back of the headstock, it is also worth removing the plate at the rear of the headstock where the oil filler plug is as some old oil will remain in the bottom of the sump,

Thanks for the replies. I’ve downloaded the Grizzly manual and they are showing a drain plug behind one of gears, which has been mentioned, but mine doesn’t have this plug.

I’ve also tried to become a member of the Chester forum, yesterday morning, but I’m still waiting for activation.

I’ve not tried to sython the oil out, so I’ll try that next.
