Hello all. I'm into all things Drummond Brothers lathes and tools. It all started as an offshoot from aero modeling and tool making for larger projects in Alluminium. I have recently restored a B Type Admiralty lathe , I now have 3 1/2 of them. 2 complete and the rest in crates. An Amolco benchtop mill and a modern Optimum pillar drill. Always interested in hearing about small old lathes and other ancient machinery.

Welcome to the forum. You are in good company. There is a number of Drummond owners on here. I have 1937 M-Type that still gives good service and is a pleasure to use.

Good to hear they are being used/saved!

I restored a1918 M type for my son who gets a lot of use out of it. It had been stored for decades and once all cleaned off (not rusty) most of the surfaces still had the original scrapping marks – it was like new. I motorised it with 1/3hp motor but it still used a flat belt for headstock..

As.Hopper says there's quite a few used on here.

I use a modern poly-V belt run straight on the old flat pulleys to drive mine. Works a treat with the big 1/2hp motor.

My long term restoration project is an early round bed – got a seriously overlarge 1HP 3 phase motor for almost nothing so it will run from that through a vfd/inverter.

Overkill, but what was available at the time.

Scheming out a countershaft. It has already had a v pulley fitted when I got it so the poly vee option is not the first choice unless a flat pulley, or two, turns up.

Hello,

I have a B type with a worn bed that i have had some luck scraping and, a worn lead screw that has had the nut filled with white metal. So I can only get about 12" travel on the saddle. Apart from that it runs well.

Have you seen the Drummond Lathe Group on Yahoo?

Hi Lee welcome to the forum. M type Drummond again. Just started a rear toolpost for mine and have acquired a set of castings for a tumbler reverse as well.

Hello Lee, as you will already have seen there is still quite a "Drummond" following. I have a "roughly" 1906 5inch split bed and a highly modified 1947/8 M. The accuracy of the lathes is definitely better than mine. Welcome to the forum. John

Saw a pic on here recently of one that has been motorized and it looked like quite a handy unit. (oooh bad pun! Totally unintentional I promise.) Then you could follow this months MEW and add CNC control.
