Venus was like a torch in the sky last night, must be the drop in pollution making the sky clearer

Edinburgh Festival cancelled so we get our city back for one year at least. This city usually belongs to the council moneygrubbers, tourist hordes and corporate sharks

Anyone else noticed that landline nuisance calls have dropped to zero?

Yes I've noticed that too but I thought in my case it was due to my recently having the Call Safe facility installed by my phone provider.

We usually get one or more every 2 hours starting from 9am

            No longer happening

edit: the digital answering machine is great for handling them

Not only have the land line junk calls stopped, we haven't had the cold callers knocking on the door selling double glazing or driveways done, peace & quite is great.

And the sky is silent and the birds are singing – now we can hear them!

Does anyone think that credit will given to the engineering companies who have rejigged all their procedures and machines to make valves, ventilators and parts for them?

Same situation here in France, blessed relief.
It's usually touting for the govt sponsored scheme to insulate loft for 1Euro.
They always hang up on the answerphone, any real callers leave a message.

I am sure the street cred will go up for all those companies helping build parts for the NHS. The street was alive tonight with the Clapping at 8.00 p.m .

I think they will. Some of our sub contractors have taken on the challenge, nothing but support from us and other companies. If we could have helped, we would.

We are managing to stay open and have a chance of keeping going. So many companies will fail over the next few months.

Give them time, they'll soon find it.I have registered with the Telephone Preference Service to stop these type of calls, fat chance, I still get the occasional attempt, & they don't leave any message when asked to by the answer machine. The b******s also try mobile # I just block the # if I don't recognize it, if it's important then they'll text.

Apparently, the human scammers like to held in conversation. But very little!

You can try speaking in Serbo Croat, or Swahili. That might end the conversation early

Recently I saw some images of how much the pollution was reduced over various cities now that really is good.

That plus point will probably be destroyed long term by effects of the birth rate explosion in spring 2021.

Absolutely agree. The Chinese will make whatever quality we are prepared to pay for. Unfortunately, from what I can see, there doesn't appear to be any middle ground. High price Western machines, or cheap Far Eastern machines.

As for cheap Chinese tools. They're great. I'll be buying many more. I wanted a Myford but the forums were full of tales of woe. People trying to get life out of something as worn as an ocean pebble. Don't think they sell new ones unless you count a parts bin bitza as new?

There are two classes of cheap Chinese tools as far as I am concerned – those that don't do the job and those that will wear out or need re-sharpening quickly – but which do the job for a bit.

I have seen, both at the club and on here examples of tools where the owner has said – I got that while I was an apprentice 50 years ago and it is still good.

I am an amateur in my sixties. If I buy a tool for a particular job it may not get used again before I am no longer able to use it. So why pay for tools with a 50 year life? The second class of cheap import does what I want.

There have always been cheap imports – a hundred years ago they were labelled as 'continental' now it is 'chinese'

There was a market for such tools then, and there is a market today – provided you know what you are buying.

If you buy a second-hand Myford or Chinese made Starrett or Moore and Wright tool do you know what you are buying?

People trying to get life out of something as worn as an ocean pebble. Don't think they sell new ones unless you count a parts bin bitza as new?

Benefits of the virus? Quieter roads. Long may it last.

I had a Myford, and it wasn't a tale of woe, more of endless irritation that as a Speed 10 it wasn't quite big enough, but its larger brother was too expensive and vastly overrated by folk who won't realise what happened to the Empire, and British industry with it, or why.

Yes, my Chinese machine tool is great, like you say, and hums as smooth as butter nearly every day. Whether there's any link between the economics that allowed it to be supplied to me at the price it was, and the risk of releasing viruses like the current one, is no doubt a matter for future analysis.
