We all know this forum is the best place to chat and keep occupied, but you can't spend twenty four hours a day on the forum!

Please use this thread to suggest websites that are likely to interest forum users.

I'll print some of the suggestions in MEW.

My suggestion is the Bovingdon Tank Museum's YouTube channel, especially the wonderful Tank Talks by David Fletcher.

        http://www.youtube.com/user/TheTankMuseum

The best place to start is his 'Bottom 5 British Tanks':

"It's not really bullet-proof. Except from a revolver. For a while. From a distance."

I have become 'hooked' on a number of boat building/repair/restore sites …'Acorn to Arabella', 'Tally Ho – the Sampson Boat Co.' and, probably the most extensive – 'SV Seeker'. A mix of skills, not just metal working, and some fascinating machinery and techniques.

One of my favourite places to visit on the annual family pilgrimages by road to the Adriatic in the 60s and 70s (father the only driver!) was the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

You can do virtual days out at Model Engineering clubs by picking a county each day and finding all the club sites there and 'visiting' the club. Many have enough video and stills to give you a good feel for their activities.

I could suggest a long list but one I've mentioned before and which I think is well worth revisiting – is Ed Hume's Gauge '1' Shay build. Over 600 photos, plus 12 videos – you do not need to be a G1 enthusiast (I'm Gauge '3' myself) to enjoy and learn something from Ed's site. The Loco is based on the 3.5" Kozo design of course…

Ed Hume – Gauge 1 Shay Build

And since i've mentioned G3 – I'll give us a plug too! wink

The Science Museum Group has lots of stuff online including the NRM.

Not quite the same as when I used to turn handles and press buttons on engines in display cases at South Kensington as a lad but plenty of interactive things.

As a volunteer and Gofor for this museum I suggest this one https://www.internalfire.com/ lots of big engines and some steam.

May I also suggest this museum which I visite recently http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/ the period it covers is post war with loads of jet types, both museums are mobility capable.

I don't understand how any model engineer with a current project can be bored! I'm self isolating in the workshop and getting lots done, and some of it is even correct.

There are factors which can make using a workshop more problematical at times like this such as:-

Nervous wives families etc who do not necessarily see us vanishing off to a workshop for hours as helpful!

Boredom can set in if one is stuck in the house 24/7, looking at websites can be useful especially if you can say oh look at this etc.

                                            An obvious suggestion:

If you haven't discovered TED talks yet, this really is worth a look. The range of subjects is vast and the quality of speakers is very high.

I think the 2020 award winner has already been identified:

The lick a toilet seat challenge, was originally the 'lick a toilet seat and kill a boomer challenge.

Just out of total boredom I actually tuned into a TV channel that had no scary news stories and found myself watching a movie that was based on a traction engine.

I never realised just how big the machines actually are. Not sure about bashing the valve thingy with a large hammer is best practice though.

Remembered the name of the movie and found a linky The Iron Maiden
